Letter to the editor:

Ranking system can help students

Having an educated electorate who is capable of objective inquiry and rational debate is quite possibly the very bedrock of our system of government. The public schools bear the primary burden of producing such an electorate and must be given every chance to perform this crucial function.

Few will disagree that our school system has been failing to do so and is in need of help. The five-star school ranking program seems like a reasonable attempt to help the schools and should be given time to produce effects.

I think the objections to the competitive nature of this plan are akin to the objections decades ago that resulted in “social promotion” being the norm today. I believe that competition can strengthen both individuals and the schools.

Most classes were split into “A” and “B” groups when I went to elementary school. Those who were satisfied to only meet the standard criteria generally stayed in the “B” group. Those who wanted to do the very best could move into the “A” group by doing more and taking harder tests with extra questions.

There was fierce competition among us to be in the “A” group and have the highest test scores. Our reward was bragging rights. Everyone had to meet the same standards for graduation. Teachers would give more help to those who needed it in the “B” group and give those in the “A” group a greater opportunity to find their limits.

I see the new school ranking system as being based on the same principles of so long ago and hope it works.
