Sandoval says no way to Yucca Mountain

Gov. Brian Sandoval says Nevada doesn't support resurrecting Yucca Mountain as a high-level nuclear waste dump or hosting an interim storage site in the state.

In a letter to Energy Secretary Steven Chu, the Republican governor reiterated Nevada's long-standing opposition to Yucca Mountain, despite overtures from Nye County in southern Nevada that it would accept the nation's radioactive waste.

Nye County commissioners sent a letter to Chu last week, expressing the county's position after an advisory panel recommended the DOE seek willing hosts to store nuclear waste.

In his own letter to Chu, Sandoval said Nye County doesn't speak for the state. He says Nevada will oppose any attempts to resuscitate Yucca Mountain or erect an interim storage facility within its boundaries.
