Weekend best bets: Smith Center opening, NASCAR, beer fest

There’s much to choose from to do this weekend, from the opening of the Smith Center for the Performing Arts to NASCAR and cheering on the Rebels in the Mountain West championships. If you’re not in a sporting frame of mind, there will be plenty of concerts and comedy to keep you entertained. Here are our best bets for the weekend:

      Thursday-Sunday: NASCAR Weekend 2012

      NASCAR Weekend 2012 is upon us, starting Thursday night with the hauler parade and continuing through the weekend with autograph signings and the race. The hauler parade and signings are free. Race prices range from $25 for individual tickets to $1,199 for suites.

      Friday: Bill Engvall at Treasure Island

      Blue Collar Comedy star Bill Engvall will be performing live at the Treasure Island Theatre. The star of TBS' The Bill Engvall Show will be doing his stand-up comedy routine. Tickets are $49 - $65.

      Friday: Chicago at the LVH

      Chicago, one of the longest-running and most successful rock bands, will be pulling into the Las Vegas Hotel for a pair of weekend shows. Look forward to hits like “Saturday in the Park” and “You’re The Inspiration.” Tickets are $60-$89.

      Friday: George Thorogood & The Destroyers at Green Valley Ranch

      Get ready for a show that's bad to the bone. George Thorogood & The Destroyers are returning to Las Vegas for a show at Green Valley Ranch's Grand Events Center. Tickets are $34.70-$79.65.

      Saturday and Sunday: 311 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena

      It’s 3/11 and for the rock band’s fans, that can only mean one thing: it’s party time. Start things off with a fan party at The Joint on Friday followed by two nights of concerts by the band at The MGM Grand Garden Arena. Tickets to the fan party are $20 and concert tickets are $86.15-$149.45.

      Saturday: KWAK Ballet Company at Charleston Heights Arts Center

      Enjoy classical ballet with the KWAK Ballet Company, featuring Kyudong Kwak and Yoomie Lee, at The Charleston Heights Arts Center. Kwak and Lee performed for 20 years with the Universal Ballet and Seoul Ballet Theatre in Korea and were principal dancers of the Nevada Ballet Theatre. Tickets are $10-$15.

      Saturday: Brew’s Best beer fest at The Village Lake Las Vegas

      More than 80 beers will be on tap at the Brew’s Best beer fest at The Village at Lake Las Vegas, including local brewing companies such as Joseph James and Tenaya Creek plus regional ones such as Stone, Lagunitas and Kona. Enjoy music by local reggae rockers HaleAmanO. Proceeds from the event benefit New Vista, an organization devoted to bettering the lives of the intellectually challenged. Tickets are $25-$40.

      Saturday: Smith Center for the Performing Arts grand opening

      The curtain rises at the Smith Center for a star studded bash featuring host Neil Patrick Harris and performers including Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson, country artists Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris and Martina McBride, singer-songwriter Carol King, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, violinist Joshua Bell, gospel great Mavis Staples, Train lead singer Pat Monahan and American Ballet Theater dancers Marcello Gomes and Luciana Paris. Also appearing will be Broadway stars including Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell, Laura Osnes, Cheyenne Jackson, Sherie Rene Scott, Montego Glover and Benjamin Walker. Tickets are $250.

    • Food vendors, DJs and clothing merchants will be on hand for the Vegas StrEATS Festival.

      Saturday: The Vegas StrEATS fest

      The Vegas StrEATS fest amps up the entertainment at downtown’s entertainment district over the weekend. Enjoy some delicious food truck fare while you jam to a few of the valley’s favorite DJs at the Saturday night extravaganza. Food vendors, including Slidin’ Thru, Funnel Cake Cafe, Tasty Bunz, Grouchy John's, Love Grub, Sno Ono, Engine 1 Pizza, Haulin' Balls, Rusty Pickle and Pops, will be on hand, along with local artists and retailers. Enjoy live entertainment throughout the night by Fly Union, Havocndeed, DJ Zo, Zhr3d, Teenwolf & Shelco Garcia, Air Stegosaurus and Dame. Artists and streetwear booths include KNYEW, Topshop, Hippoe Esthetics, Black Wolf, A Girls Glitter, Random Heather, I Don't Kill Your TV, Happy Panda and others. Entry is free.
