A 22-year-old motorcyclist died and his passenger suffered serious injuries in an accident Monday night, Metro Police said.

Police said the accident happened at 7:38 p.m. at the intersection of Ann Road and Rio Vista Street in the northwest valley.

The preliminary investigation indicates the 2006 Honda CBR motorcycle was traveling east on Ann Road at a high rate of speed, police said.

Meanwhile, a 2003 Ford F-250 pickup truck was traveling west on Ann and attempting to make a left turn onto Rio Vista, police said.

The motorcycle collided with the pickup truck as it was trying to turn, police said. The motorcycle driver and his 24-year-old passenger, Eric Blount, were ejected from the cycle, police said. Paramedics pronounced the motorcycle driver dead at the scene.

Blount was transported to University Medical Center’s trauma unit with serious injuries, police said. The 41-year-old driver of the pickup truck, Lana Loebig, suffered minor injuries and was released from the scene.

Police said traffic officers are continuing their investigation. Identification of the deceased driver is pending with the Clark County Coroner's Office.

The accident was the 21st traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year.

CORRECTION: Metro Police, in a news release Tuesday, have clarified that the motorcycle passenger was a male. | (March 6, 2012)
