Tree-lined sidewalks will just have to wait.

Plans to turn Downtown’s Main Street into a one-way route with tree-lined sidewalks have been temporarily shelved. The Regional Transportation Commission, in cooperation with the city of Las Vegas, applied for a $10.7 million grant from TIGER, an economic recovery program for city transportation projects. But when the U.S. Department of Transportation announced its 2012 recipients last week, Las Vegas Multi-Modal Transportation Project wasn’t one of them.
The funds would have helped convert Main and Commerce streets into one-way roads with new lighting, landscaping and other improvements and made up for nearly half of the project’s estimated $25 million cost. Letters of endorsement were sent from Sen. Harry Reid, Rep. Shelley Berkley, Rep. Joe Heck, Mayor Carolyn Goodman, city councilman Bob Coffin and Sheriff Doug Gillespie, all of whom cited the project as a key component of revitalization.
A city spokesman says the project will be put on hold until funds can be secured.
