A man who went swimming in Boulder Basin at Lake Mead around 2:30 p.m. Saturday is missing, according to Randy Lavasseur, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area assistant chief ranger.

Lavasseur said the man had left a woman and a toddler on a 21-foot boat when he went for the swim. The wind began pushing the boat away from the man, who was not wearing a life vest, and the woman on the boat did not know how to operate it, Lavasseur said.

The woman called 911 to report the missing man, Lavasseur said. Both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Lake Mead rangers began searching for him and helped the woman and toddler to safety.

Lavasseur said the man is described as extremely fit, which may give him a better chance for survival than some people stranded in water.
