Smashburger's Sin City Burger
While Robin Leach takes his traditional summer vacation under the Tuscan sun in Italy, many of our Strip and Las Vegas personalities have stepped forward in his absence to pen their own words of wisdom. Our thanks to them all. We continue today with comedian Geechy Guy, who was discovered on Robin’s show “Star Search” with host Ed McMahon. Guy beat out Ray Romano way back when!
Geechy was on Season 6 of “America’s Got Talent” and won Las Vegas Week, but he was eliminated after the quarterfinals. He holds the Guinness World Record for most jokes told in one hour: 676! And he was voted Best Comedian by our sister publication Las Vegas Weekly.
I’ve been living in Las Vegas since 2010, and I’ve dined at some of the best restaurants in the city. But you can’t eat at Joel Robuchon all the time. So here are some of the everyday restaurants I frequent.
For breakfast, I like to cruise over to Egg Works in Green Valley (East Sunset). They serve morning favorites until 3 p.m. (which is about the time I get up.) Although it’s not on the standard menu, I always ask for the prime rib omelet. If they’ve got the meat, they’ll make it. That, along with golden fried potatoes, luscious banana nut muffins and the best coffee in town (hazelnut), makes a meal that stays with me till dinner.
On Sundays or special occasions, my wife and I often visit Hash House a Go-Go (West Sahara, the Plaza, Imperial Palace and M Resort). The humongous creation Andy’s Sage Fried Chicken Benedict is a mega meal for two. Savory fried chicken breasts piled on top of two eggs, bacon, mashed potatoes and biscuits with maple reduction -- whew! I need a nap after that.
In the middle of the day, if I’m near UNLV, I check out Smashburger. Their Sin City Burger is the biggest, greasiest and most delicious piece of artery-hardening indulgence that you’ll ever eat. Who knew that our cheeseburgers were missing a bacon and fried egg sandwich with onion strings? I can hardly get my mouth around it.
As I’m driving around the city, I always keep an eye out for the Slidin’ Thru food truck. I got hooked on their pulled porky sliders with caramelized jalapenos. I used to get them almost daily at the company’s headquarters near the airport, but since they’ve moved, I just have to look for the truck.
My wife and I love happy hours. Cheap food and drinks … we’re there! Morton’s Steakhouse (East Flamingo) offers petite versions of their delicious, upscale food from 5 to 7 p.m. weekdays. Combine a miniature wedge salad with filet mignon sandwiches, smoked salmon pizza and mini crab cake BLTs, and you’ve got a great dinner.
When guests come to town, we always take them to Brio (Town Square and Tivoli Village). From 3 to 6 p.m., they serve a generous, discount food and drink menu in the bar. Try beef Carpaccio, toasted ravioli and spicy shrimp with eggplant for just $3.95 each. Wine and select cocktails are only $5. The last time we went there, our group sampled every item on the menu and loved them all.
Late at night, after my show, I often stop at Roberto’s Tacos (citywide). They’re open 24 hours and serve a big pile of carne asada nachos with radishes and cucumbers on the side. Hot.
Finally, sometimes you just gotta cook. When we do, we shop at Fresh & Easy (citywide). They have an extensive array of unique, pre-prepared foods of every cuisine. Their packaged, prepped and ready-to-grill meats and vegetables are the best of all. We love pork and chicken sausages, salmon skewers, marinated steaks and buttered asparagus all cooked on the grill. We may never use the stove again!
