Teen passenger killed in DUI accident identified

Accident scene

The Clark County Coroner’s Office has identified the passenger killed early Thursday morning when a suspected drunken driver crashed in Summerlin.

Leo Bernard Roybal III, 19, died from blunt-force injuries to his torso, officials said. The coroner ruled Roybal’s death an accident.

Roybal, of Las Vegas, was a passenger in a 2005 Ford Mustang driven by 21-year-old Ralph Homer Corpuz, who was arrested on a count of DUI-alcohol resulting in death, police said.

The accident occurred at 3:22 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Alta Drive and Joe Willis Street, police said. The driver apparently lost control while traveling west on Alta Drive and crossed a landscaped center median, police said.

The Ford Mustang struck a tree in the median, then continued into the eastbound travel lanes of Alta Drive, police said.

The driver and passenger were transported to University Medical Center’s trauma unit, where Roybal was pronounced dead, police said. Homer suffered minor injuries and was arrested after his release, police said.

The accident marked the 66th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year.
