Fatal accident

A traffic accident overnight in the western valley has left one person dead and another under arrest.

At 3:22 a.m., police were notified that a Ford Mustang had hit some trees near the intersection of Alta Drive and South Pavilion Center Drive, said Metro Police spokeswoman Laura Meltzer. According to a police report, the Mustang was traveling westbound on Alta Drive at Joe Willis Street when it lost control while crossing the landscaped center median. The Mustang struck a tree at the median and then continued into the eastbound lanes of Alta Drive.

Both the driver and the passenger were transported to University Medical Center Trauma Center, where the passenger was pronounced dead. The driver, Ralph Homer Corpuz, 21, suffered minor injuries and was arrested for suspicion of DUI, according to the report.

Traffic around Alta Drive and Pavilion Center Drive was blocked as police continued their investigation, but the roads have since been reopened.

This is the 66th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year. The collision remains under investigation by Metro’s Accident Investigations Section.
