Letter to the editor:

New airport name would be beneficial

Regarding Richard N. Velotta’s recent column, “Should McCarran airport be renamed for Las Vegas?”:

I fully support Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross’ proposal to change the name of McCarran International Airport to Las Vegas International Airport.

Ross, a member of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority board of directors, makes an astute, salient point when he says “Las Vegas” is known internationally. Further, LAS is McCarran’s International Air Transport Association location identifier. And those are the initials on luggage.

A few caveats: While recovering from a devastating recession and looking toward future prosperity, sentimentality to the name McCarran should not impede progress — you can always name something else after the late senator. And of course there’s the biggie: Do you have any idea how much money it’ll cost for the name change? Yes, millions. And likewise, I rhetorically ask: Do you know how many jobs you’ll create in the process and how much tax money you’ll collect? And the national and worldwide positive free publicity is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
