Letter to the editor:

Citizens being used as pawns

This letter is to comment on Republican efforts to eliminate “Obamacare.”

It looks like House Republicans may succeed with an initiative to vote out the present plan for health care reform as initiated by President Barack Obama.

Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has spearheaded this effort, suggesting a vague “one piece at a time” remedy, but the major thrust has been to sandbag the president’s program. Without an alternative that addresses the lack of coverage for many millions of Americans, such efforts to oppose the plan in place would potentially leave the medical care system and uninsured Americans in a state of chaos. The absence of an alternative ensures that emergency rooms would be overcrowded with people who could be served elsewhere at a much lower cost and would leave others with no medical care at all.

This kind of oppositional mentality, without offering meaningful solutions, seems to characterize the way Republicans try to do business. It is a feeble attempt to undermine the president, using the most vulnerable citizens as political chess pawns.
