Overnight bridgework to close portion of I-15

Portion of I-15 to close nightly

A stretch of northbound Interstate 15 in the northern valley will be shutting down nightly this week, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Northbound I-15 will be closed and traffic detoured between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. from the Lake Mead Boulevard exit to the Cheyenne Avenue exit, said said Randy DeVal, deputy director of public works for the city of North Las Vegas. Work will continue Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, she said.

Crews will be installing steel girders for the new North Fifth Street Bridge during that time, said Juliet Casey, spokeswoman for the city of North Las Vegas.

Officials cautioned motorists to expect delays. The detour will take traffic from the Lake Mead exit west to Losee Road, north to Cheyenne Avenue and then to the northbound I-15 on-ramp.

The work is part of the larger $140 million North Fifth Street Super Arterial Project, DuVal said. The intent is to provide a North-South major thoroughfare that would connect employment centers to residential areas, he added.

Motorists heading southbound on the I-15 will face closures in the same nighttime period July 16-19, when crews finish the bridge on that side of the highway, DuVal said.
