Vice President Joe Biden asked Mitt Romney to “show us his (papers)” during his keynote speech Tuesday at the National Council of La Raza annual conference in Las Vegas.
Romney’s tax papers, that is.
Biden juxtaposed Romney’s previous statements in support of Arizona’s immigration enforcement law — and its so-called “show me your papers” provision — with the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s release of only one year’s worth of tax returns.
“When his father, George Romney, was a candidate for president in 1968, he released 12 years of tax returns because, as he said, ‘One year could be a fluke, perhaps done for show,’” Biden said to a crowd of approximately 2,000 gathered at Mandalay Bay Convention Center. “His son has released one year of his tax returns. Making a lie of the old adage: Like father, like son. He wants you to show your papers, but he won’t show us his.”
Biden, speaking in support of the re-election of his boss, President Barack Obama, pointed to the more than two dozen passed or proposed voter-identification laws since 2011 – laws that opponents including Biden and Obama say will suppress minority votes – as an attack on civil rights.
“Imagine what the Supreme Court will look like after four years of Governor Romney,” the vice president said. “Imagine what it will act like. Imagine what it will mean for civil rights, voting rights, and so much we have fought so hard for so long to accomplish. Imagine a Justice Department that supports, rather than challenges, continued efforts to suppress the right to vote. Because folks that and so much more will happen if Governor Romney wins.”
In a survey of more than 800 conference attendees that NCLR released Monday, 36 percent of respondents identified jobs and the economy as the most important issues to the community, immigration followed at 29 percent, and education was the top priority for 21 percent of attendees.
The survey echoed what previous polling of Latinos has shown, and Biden attacked Romney’s economic policy, including his support for extending Bush-era tax cuts to the very wealthy.
“The tax cut will cost $1 trillion, 55 percent of which goes to just 120,000 households in America, households of an average income of $8.4 million,” Biden said, arguing that Romney would cut social and educational programs such Head Start, adversely affecting young Americans and families.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who will chair the upcoming Democratic National Convention, addressed the crowd prior to Biden. Villaraigosa called for comprehensive immigration reform free from partisan politics and applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to strike three of four provisions of Arizona’s immigration law, SB 1070.
“When President Obama directed the Department of Homeland Security to stop deportations of the Dream Act-eligible youth, a dark cloud was lifted for hundreds of thousands of young people,” Villaraigosa said, noting that the policy change was a stop-gap measure.
Biden was accompanied by his wife, Jill, who introduced him to the La Raza audience. As the vice president began his speech, he poked fun at his propensity for off-the-cuff statements that later need to be explained.
“I have a bad habit of saying what I believe, and I’m going to say it today,” he said to laughter and loud applause.
Tuesday is the final day of the four-day NCLR annual conference. This is the first time that the nationwide civil rights organization’s national conference is in Las Vegas. The 2013 conference will take place in New Orleans.

This is where the multimillionaires stash their cash because the banking laws for those independent territories are specifically written to hide the transactions of their owners. They are NOT transparent to the American tax and legal system.
So why is Romney putting his cash offshore? How do offshore deposits create jobs in America? How do offshore accounts better prepare their owners to pay their fair share of taxes? How do offshore accounts improve the economic strength of this Country?
I understand that only the wealthy can afford to create blind trusts and other secretive accounts, where the owner's name becomes a code number on deposit. The Caymans don't service main street - they start at the Penthouse level and go up from there.
Romney is clearly obligated to explain his choice of offshore banking entities and demonstrate his veracity.

Bain Capital has around 138 private (secret) accounts in the Cayman Islands, according to a recent report in Vanity Fair Magazine. These accounts are held by many of Romney's business associates and their fortunes are connected up with his. Romney would never spill the beans on his business associates because they would cut him to pieces.
With Romney calling the shots, the banking industry in the offshore world would see a boost like never before, but how would this boost create jobs in America? How do offshore accounts create jobs in America?
Romney MUST ANSWER that question, so what is holding him back?

We have a very legitimate right to ask that Candidate Romney show his Tax returns. We have to know whether someone who is planning to become President has our interests in mind. I wonder WHY so many people are interested in Mitt Romney's financial fortune. Obama is a multi-millionaire. SO what is the difference?
Voters should FOCUS on Jobs and the Economy - not how much money a person makes. And if Mitt Romney has the intelligence, and business accumen, to create wealth, earn millions of dollars, and start many business - which hire people too - I say THAT should be the major FOCUS for whether he would be a good president, or not.
So some folks need to re-think the the qualifications both candidates have for being president. Obama has a proven track-record of being UNABLE to correct a bad economy, or foster private industry's creation of JOBS. Indeed, if Obama had his way, we would SPEND ourselves into the poor-house (which is where we are headed now).
Romney also has a proven track-record - but it is one of being ABLE to fix a bad economy lower taxes (as Gov in Mass.), and help private industry (he saved the Olympic Games), and to lead the turn-around of weak businesses (through Bain Capital) by creating new businesses that eventually prospered.
In fact, Romney did with Bain Capital exactly what many business stil do TODAY - with mergers, acquisitions, buy-outs, IPO;s, etc. - all in pursuit of a better organization and profitability. And those results are what creates JOBS, HIRES people, and ensures a company will survive.
So Romney has released one year of his tax returns. What if he released 10 years. It would make no difference to voters - because Romney's tax return are personal; not evidence of his ability to run the United States governmet.
Obama has had his shot; I am willing to give Romney a chance. Surley, he has more experience and knowledge about the business of America than Obama has. Obama has proven that already by his failings - and, while I am at it - LIES.
Just like BIDEN lied to the La Raza conference when he made a FALSE ASSERTION: "Imagine what the Supreme Court will look like after four years of Governor Romney."
Excuse me, but the portender to the Obama throne does not even know that Supreme Court Justices are appointed FOR LIFE - and Romney could not change the make-up of that court unless one of the Justices died.
And finally, Obama said during his LAST 2008 campaign that his health care plan would "...not cost taxpayers one dime." Well, well, well. Here we are with 42 Billion in taxes coming up - and more health care taxes and regulations that will kill jobs and further decimate the economy.
SO vote for your favorite candidate, but think about WHY you are doing it, and what the impact will be for the next 4 years. And don't take what I have said for granted. Look it up. It has been reported in many places in the press.

When I was in business, I had various accounts all over the country. I had reasons for keeping funds separate and in different states, none of that had to do with taxes. There are business reasons for transferring funds through international account, including swiss bank accounts. Romney is not a trust fund kid who needs tax shelters and he gave 16% of his income to charity..

Biden is running for office. He is Obama's surrogate and he said, "Romney wants us to show him our papers." Whos is "us" and what papers is he referring to?
Is Biden an official of the US Govenment that has a legitimate interest in "our papers?"
Is Biden stating that the Official US Government, Obama and Biden are not interested in our papers, in fact..that we should not have to have papers because Rich Guys have swiss bank accounts?

The left is despair ate. The Romney witch hunt is evidence of how hard up the Obama campaign is to give Romney a black eye. It isn't working. Obama has too much baggage on his back from the failed policy decisions the past three plus years. America knows the real story about the president. It is not good news.
If this is all no big deal then show us your papers Mittens. You are afterall applying to be CEO of our country. Be helpful in evaluating your qualifications. As employers we require some disclosure. Something I realize you avoid like the plague with your "private" investment clubs and the like. Well this is not one of those gigs.
If Romney has followed the laws then what is the fuss about? There are plenty of foreign nationals that have accounts here in the USA, why does Biden not question them? If any poster here thinks saving tax dollars is a crime or dishonorable please post your tax return showing you overpaid because you are such a great citizen. The blame goes to the tax code on this whole discussion.

When Obama's appointees were asked for their tax returns, many hadn't filed or were inaccurate including Obama's pick for Secretary of The Treasury. I beleive he blamed Turbo Tax. What did Obama's returns reveal? Was his lifestyle commensurate with his reported income?
I notice a lot of people changing the subject when the concern is that Romney has not released his tax returns. How can you excuse him when you don't even have any information about whether he has broken laws or not? Everyone's financial situation is different and some on this chat have compared theirs to Mr Romney's. You can't really do that until you know his facts. Romney is the only presidential candidate who has not released his tax returns going back 10 years. Never has anyone drug his feet as much as Mitt Romney has in releasing his tax returns. Has he committed fraud? or not declared everything he should have? has he hidden assets? has he collected money he hasn't reported? 'Full disclosure' is the standard for anyone seeking higher office or appointment. I believe there is something quite damning in those tax returns that Mitt doesn't want folks to know about. Why else would he not be releasing them? Lots of folks have money. I don't care if Romney has money. I do care if he has broken the law. Release your returns Mr Romney and let the chips fall where they may. Its the right thing to do.
