Five-car collision leaves one dead, injures three others

A five-car collision Saturday night left one driver dead and three others with minor injuries, according to a report from Metro Police.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Boulder Highway and East Russell Road at 11:43 p.m. and involved 3 SUVs and two automobiles, the report said.

Witnesses told police that a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer went through a red light when it hit the right front of a 2005 Toyota Corolla traveling westbound on Russell Road.

According to police, the Corolla hit a 2010 Nissan Rogue, sending it into a light pole. The Toyota struck the front of a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe and the Chevrolet Trailblazer struck the right front of a 2007 Nissan Sentra.

The driver of the Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The other injured drivers were treated at Sunrise Hospital with minor injuries.

The collision remains under investigation by the Metro Accident Investigation Section. A police spokesman did not know if any charges were pending for any of the drivers.

This is the 64th fatal collision under Metro’s jurisdiction this year.
