An 18-year-old suffered critical injuries when the motorcycle he was riding struck a car Sunday night in the western valley, Metro Police said.

The accident happened at 10:22 p.m. near the intersection of Sahara Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive, police said.

The preliminary investigation indicates the motorcyclist, identified as Frederick Carapel, was speeding and apparently failed to see a 2009 Ford Focus stopped at a red traffic light on Sahara Avenue, police said.

Carapel was thrown off the motorcycle, a 2008 CBR1000, when it hit the right rear of the car, police said. He was transported to University Medical Center in critical condition.

The driver of the automobile was not injured, police said.

Metro’s accident investigation section is continuing to probe the crash.
