A fire, attributed to a child playing with matches, caused approximately $10,000 in damage to a valley apartment building, according to a report from Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters responded to 514 Wardelle St. at around 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, where they found the fire in the closet of a rear bedroom. They extinguished the fire within two minutes, but it gutted the bedroom and caused damage throughout the entire unit.

According to firefighters, five children and their mother were home when the fire started. The mother told investigators she smelled smoke and heard the smoke alarm. She unsuccessfully tried putting the fire out using a bucket of water.

After evacuating her five children, ranging from seven months to 7 years old, she called 911 to report the fire. She told investigators that one of her children told her what had happened.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family. There were no injuries in connection with the fire.

  1. All kids play with matches and if this kid admitted he was playing with matches AFTER the fire, what is the big deal?
