Internet and Twitter reports Tuesday night by a former Las Vegas TV personality that said the Miss America Pageant would not be held here in Las Vegas next year were labeled as “totally untrue” this morning by the organization’s top executives. The broadcaster cited her “reliable, impeccable sources” stating that the pageant would be held next year in Mississippi.
“Not so,” Miss America Organization Chairman Sam Haskell told me today. “Totally untrue. We have another year on our Vegas contracts. We all love being in Vegas. It’s a wonderful host city. Moving to Vegas from Atlantic City seven years ago revitalized and rejuvenated the pageant. Next year’s pageant will be in Vegas.
“We are aware of the rumors. We are aware that three other destination cities have expressed interest in hosting the pageant at a later time, but those are just rumors for now, too.”
Saturday’s ABC telecast drew great ratings for the network. “We are over the moon both with the show and the high numbers and key young-adult demographics,” an ABC executive said. “The best Miss America in eight years of ratings, second only to our live New Year’s Eve special in non-sports live events.”
