Gov. Brian Sandoval preparing for Nevada’s 150th birthday

Gov. Brian Sandoval issued an executive order Wednesday to prepare the state for its 150th birthday, on Oct. 31, 2014.

Nevada Day celebrations have largely been a Northern Nevada affair, but Sandoval hopes to have a statewide celebration for its sesquicentennial, said senior adviser Dale Erquiaga.

Erquiaga said a committee will apply for grants and determine how best to mark 150 years since statehood, which came on Oct. 31, 1864. He said some states have had multiple events starting the year prior and culminating in a celebration on the actual birthday.

The celebration committee co-chairs are Neena Laxalt of Neena Laxalt Consulting and Bob Brown, publisher of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
