Authorities say suspicious package was backpack filled with trash

Updated Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012 | 5:34 p.m.

Authorities responded Tuesday to a suspicious package downtown near the Foley Federal Building that turned out to be a backpack filled with trash, officials said.

Multiple agencies, including Las Vegas Fire and Rescue and Metro Police, were called to the area near Bridger Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard shortly after noon to investigate the package as a precaution, officials said.

“They found out it was not a threat,” fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said, adding that the person who reported the package was right to do so.
