Henderson fire department goes digital to speed along services

The Henderson Fire Department hopes to save time — and money — with some help from some new technology.

This week the fire department will implement a new electronic patient care reporting system in an attempt to improve medical outcomes for emergency transports.

Fire Chief Steve Goble said the department received new tablet-based, touch-screen laptops through a regional grant to help with patient charting.

“It’s all electronic. It leads you through patient care, history and medications,” Goble said. “It’s got a very robust database and tracks trends.”

Before, emergency responders were required to hand-write charts and reports, then manually enter the data into the computer once back at the station, Goble said.

Now responders can share information online with medical professionals while en route to the hospital and perform real-time monitoring of emergency medical services.

“It will be a time saver,” Goble said. “It keeps your crews available and documentation to hospitals quicker.”

The department anticipates responding to more than 16,000 calls for emergency medical services this year.
