Henderson accepting applications for vacated council seat

The city of Henderson is accepting applications for the Ward 3 council seat.

The position opened Tuesday when former Councilwoman Kathleen Vermillion’s resignation became effective. Vermillion announced in December that she was stepping down from the council, citing personal reasons. Her successor will be appointed to fill the remainder of Vermillion's four-year term, which ends in June 2013.

The council then voted 3-1, with Vermillion abstaining,at a Dec. 20 meeting to appoint a new council member. The cost of appointment will be $340 — the expense of publishing legal notice — versus $248,000 for holding a special election.

Applications for the position can be found on thecity’s website. Applicants must have resided in Henderson residents for at least one year and been a resident of Ward 3 for at least 30 days before the last day of the filing period.

Eligible candidates will be required to make a three-minute presentation on their interest and qualifications for the position to the council at a special council meeting.

The deadline to fill the vacancy is Feb. 3.

Applicants have until Jan. 10 to turn in an interest packet to the city clerk from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 240 Water St.
