Campus attack
A cafeteria fight at Green Valley High School today led one school district police officer to draw his gun at a 15-year-old student who attacked him.
Green Valley High School administrators broke up a cafeteria fight between two students around 12:05 p.m., according to a statement released by acting Clark County Schools Police Chief James Ketsaa.
One of the students involved in the fight fled campus and returned at 12:17 p.m. when he was confronted by an administrator and school police officer assigned to the Henderson campus at 460 Arroyo Grande Blvd., officials said.
The student hit the officer and made verbal threats, provoking the officer to draw his gun in order to take the student into custody, officials said.
According to the release, the student fled the scene, but was later taken into custody at his Henderson home by school police without further incident.
The officer suffered a concussion in the incident, said Amanda Fulkerson, school district spokeswoman.
The student was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center and faces charges of battery on a police officer and disturbance of school, officials said.
The school district investigates every incident in which a weapon is drawn on campus, Fulkerson said.
According to the release sent out by the acting chief of police, “The Clark County School District provides school police officers with advanced training in the areas of intervention and use of force to protect the safety of students, staff and officers in confrontational situations in which a student might have a weapon.”
Fulkerson said after the initial investigation, there is “no reason to suspend the officer.”
A letter explaining the incident will go out Thursday to the parents of students who attend the school, she said.
