Fired teacher sues Agassi academy

A fired teacher filed a lawsuit this week against the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in Las Vegas, alleging racial and age discrimination.

Represented by local law firm Barry Levinson & Associates, James Holmes Jr. filed suit Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas.

The suit says Holmes, who is black, encountered discrimination after being hired in 2005 as a biology teacher for ninth- and 10th-graders. After lodging a complaint, he claimed, he was fired in retailation during January 2010.

Holmes’ attorneys are seeking general damages of $75,000, unspecified punitive damages and an order requiring the school to establish practices providing equal employment opportunities for minorities and the elderly.

Agassi, the former tennis star, is not mentioned in the lawsuit.

A representative for the school he founded told TMZ.com, which first reported on the lawsuit, "We will aggressively defend the suit because the case is baseless and without any merit."
