Adelsons may donate $20 million to Newt Gingrich after all

Wong Maye-E / AP

Sheldon Adelson is considered the prized get for pro-Gingrich groups.

Some political observers laughed it off when it was reported that Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson had promised to spend $20 million to help elect GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich.

It appears Adelson may be abiding by that outsized promise.

Several national news outlets are reporting that Adelson is considering another $10 million contribution to the pro-Gingrich super-political action committee Winning our Future. Adelson and his family have already donated $11 million to the PAC, money that most credit with keeping Gingrich in the race.

Gingrich has been on a losing streak since the Jan. 31 Florida primary and is trying to regroup with a focus on fundraising. During the Nevada caucuses, for example, he limited his appearances in order to make calls asking donors for money.

Meanwhile, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has been gaining momentum as the key challenger to front-runner Mitt Romney.

Adelson, who disagrees with Santorum’s socially conservative views, wants to blunt Santorum’s latest rise in the race, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston reported on Twitter last week that Adelson hasn’t yet pulled the trigger on the latest $10 million contribution.

  1. Mr. Adelson must have read pundit Jonathan Chait's review of the race this week, and immediately got scared and coughed up more money for Mr. Gingrich:

"The unpredictable Republican presidential race has taken another surprising turn as recent numbers show Mongol warlord Genghis Khan (Santorum) seizing the lead in national polls of likely GOP primary voters. Benefiting from widespread doubts about Mitt Romney's authenticity and ideological commitment, Genghis has changed the shape of the race by sounding sharp populist themes that resonate with supporters of the tea party. 'Mitt Romney wants to manage Washington, D.C.,' he told an enthusiastic crowd in Scottsdale, Arizona. 'I want to burn it to the ground, slay its inhabitants, and stack their skulls in pyramids reaching to the sky.'"

That was too much even for a staunch Republican to take, I guess.

  2. Newt's Toast. We All know this is for the benefit of Mitt to keep the Christian Conservative Vote divided and Santorum from winning. If Sheldon wanted to do anything positive he would donate the money instead to begin finding a Major Museum, Hospital, University Medical School, etc... in Las Vegas that gave him th eopportunity to live th elife he lives. Come on Sheldon how about a few crumbs for the Little People of Las Vegas.

  3. Sheldon, as a member of the 1% party you really should know the ROI in Fib Newton is truly a waste of your fortune.

Now perhaps you have oodles of fortune to waste, but wouldn't it be a grand idea to waste it on a new Bentley,...waste it on another private jet,...or scatter it around Vegas where it can do some good? Maybe buy a few thousand hungry people a meal, a room and a hot shower,...maybe some new sneakers?

Sorry, I may have just outed you, asked you to "do some good" with your oodles but that's not how you roll. Its fine, just don't squander your wealh handing it over to a washed up lunitic who "frankly" won't be President with or without your fortune propping up his swill. Just sayin...

  4. I don't care what your personal political persuasion is...

If we can't see this as wrong, on it's face...we have succumbed to complete indifference, and we ought to reexamine the notion of a 'freely elected government' in the U.S.

  5. What tax rate does he pay? Clearly it's not 25% like those who labor for a living. These guys demand a low tax rate to help buy elections and to pay lobbyists to support specialty tax laws. This is part of what they do with the money - look after their personal views. No wonder he is funding a Republican.

  6. I wouldn't mind Adelson spending his money on a losing proposition, but since he has done good things for the Jewish community here and elsewhere with his philanthropy, it's too bad he chooses to spend his money on a worthless cause instead of putting more into the worthwhile cause of education that he has long supported.

  7. Men without consciences: Adelson and Wynn

It's too bad that people in this country continue to support their casinos. And, don't try to argue that their casinos keep people employed because if THEY were not the owners, someone else would be, and just MAYBE, different owners would have a conscience or at least a sense of patriotic duty.

The money Adelson and Wynn make either goes to communist China or to the likes of Newt and probably have it nailed down to make sure they are tax deductible too.

  8. Can't put to much on Sheldon what about George and Warren trying to elect Barrack? It is all the same game. Newt twitter he has an idea for $2.50 gas at the pump... where is "O" on this idea?

  9. How anyone can claim antisemitism is ridiculous! And as for his philanthropy, it pales in comparison to his other contributions and alleged dealings:

  10. Anti-American is more like it.

  11. $2.50 per gallon gas????? LOL. The longer this GOP CLOWN CIRCUS goes on, the better. The GOP is reduced to mindless pandering to their mindless base, while the TRUE ELECTORATE, independents, will decide the election. HINT: OBAMA IN A LANDSLIDE that will make Goldwater look like a contender.
