Las Vegas traffic stop leads to ‘Suge’ Knight’s arrest
Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012 | 12:07 p.m.
Marion “Suge” Knight, former head of Death Row Records, was arrested for possessing marijuana during a traffic stop Wednesday, Metro Police said.
Metro spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said the stop occurred at 5:34 p.m. Wednesday in the 4000 block of Arville Street in the western valley.
A record check during the traffic stop revealed that Knight, 46, had three outstanding warrants in Las Vegas related to traffic offenses, Meltzer said. The patrol officer then found marijuana in Knight’s possession, she said.
Knight, who played defensive end for the UNLV football team in 1985 and 1986, was arrested and booked in the Clark County Detention Center in connection with the warrants, an unsafe lane change and nonmedical possession of a controlled substance less than 1 ounce, Meltzer said.
Knight was later released from jail on his own recognizance, police said.
Knight, co-founded Death Row Records in 1982 with Andre Young, better known as Dr. Dre. The label has produced such rap stars as Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.

Not paying 50 bucks to a Traffic attorney to get your tickets gone from one of those Vegas Speed Traps is not smart. Marijuana should be Legalized and Police Focused on Real Criminals. The Money being wasted for the enforcement of Crazy laws is insane. However soon the Republican Presidential Candidates would imprison women for taking Birth Control and this will create a whole new level of insanity.
Was he arrested for the warrants or for possessing marijuana? I do not believe he should have been arrested simply for possessing the demon herb according to state law. Hopefully, as usual, the Sun is incorrect in stating that he was arrested for possessing the dope and was instead arrested for his warrants.
Also, why didn't the cops kick him in the head and/or shoot him? Seems to me that they were sleeping through how to be a traffic cop in Las Vegas 101.
Just what we need, to scare another millionaire out of Las Vegas back to Cali.

I think he played football for UNLV in the 80's....can anyone confirm that?
he did. not sure what years.
@newnvres I find your broad assumptions to be out of "left" field. From what I understand Ron Paul (A republican GOP candidate) will legalize Marijuana. And where do you read anywhere that a GOP president will imprison a woman for using BC?
At least talk reasonable points and not ridiculous one.
Didn't he murder people in the 90's, yep.
Can the person who wrote this article please verify why he was arrested for the possesion of marijuana which is a civil citation and a misdemeanor? Does anyone at this paper care at all what they are reporting or do they just throw all this crap out there and hope nobody actually fully tries to understand it? I know this is Nevada but at least pretend to have some sort of journalistic standards. Maybe hire some kids from Utah State or ASU to help you out?
Wait a second my comment was removed? For calling Suge Knight a "woman beating thug"? I could understand if it was speculation or name calling but please "moderator" look at his criminal record he is a convicted person including but not limited to
Battery on a female. So I don't get why my comment would get removed if in fact that is what he is per his own criminal record or does the sun have another definition of thug?
Arrested? Really? Of all the people that Metro and Henderson cops kill during traffic stops, they let this guy live?
The arrogance of anyone who gets a ticket and either ignores it or chucks it in the garbage. Send them to jail for the day. Once they pay the tickets and fines, let them out. TAKE CARE OF YOUR TICKETS!! Suge has had so many run ins...you would think the moron would think twice. Guess not.
Plus, the dumb@ss is already on 3 years probation.
Sheer arrogance. You're on probation Suge. You might think he would know not to do anything stupid like having weed in their car, driving on a suspended license or not paying traffic tickets. Wake up, hello, McFly!!!
Call the Gestapo!!! This man had marijuana in his car and unpaid speeding tickets!! How low can you get??? Let's warm up the electric chair.

The idiot is already on probation. Is it that difficult to obey the laws of the land and pay a parking ticket? It's not the significance of the infraction, it's the "I can do whatever the hell I want" attitude. Suge has had so many chances to fly right. He screws up every single one. Maybe not the electric chair...but a thump on the head might help. Clearly he doesn't understand the term "law abiding"...or doesn't care.
He's lucky Seekatz and his crew didn't stop him.

I SEE another Slap on the Hand in the works here.
If you read the article you will see he played football for UNLV in 85 and 86.
Vegaslee, the article didn't mention football until late this afternoon.
"It's not the significance of the infraction, it's the "I can do whatever the hell I want" attitude."
TomD -- no, it's the "Bill of Rights" attitude. And you misapplied that "I can do whatever the hell I want" attitude. It's the usual Metro bullies-with-badges swagger.
Since nothing is mentioned in this article about how the weed was discovered, I have to assume it's Metro's usual complete defiance of their oaths to support, defend and protect the Fourth Amendment and its state equivalent, and they looked for it anyway.
"If the exercise of constitutional rights will thwart the effectiveness of a system of law enforcement, then there is something very wrong with that system." -- Escobedo v. State of Illinois, 378 U.S. 478, 490 (1964)
The "War on (Some) Drugs" will never end bcz it is isn't about drugs. It never was. It is about jobs. The "Drug War" is the largest, costliest, longest running jobs program the country has ever seen.
Just think of how many people would lose their jobs if the Drug War ended. Not just patrol officers, but detectives, judges, prison guards, prison doctors, probation officers, records clerks. That is to say nothing of the construction workers who build the facilities, mechanics who maintain law enforcement vehicles, gas stations that sell the gas that goes into police cars, bakery cooks who make the donuts, and on and on and on.
So even when enough people realize other countries have abandoned drub policies modeled on US policies to adopt other drug policies that are not only more effective, but cheaper, than the US's outdated drug policies. Even then, the Drug War won't end, bcz it is not about drugs. It is about jobs.
Of course, a large number of people aren't bothered by such pesky things bcz they don't why it should concern them if someone has their rights violated or not and is put in jail or prison for years at a cost of roughly $30,000 a year and their family breaks up leaving another single mom t o raise more boys who will grow up without a father figure"
Who do they think pays for it when other people are doing time?
@KillerB
The guys had more run ins with the law than could be counted. I call that a "I can do what I want attitude"....
Most normal people would agree.. Go back to sleep. You need your rest.
Gee, who could have seen that coming?
"Just think of how many people would lose their jobs if the Drug War ended."

"The guys had more run ins with the law than could be counted."
TomD -- I'd love to see what you have to say when YOU find yourself in government's crosshairs, whether it be a "criminal" record, revenue or code enforcement. The hard truth sheep like you fail to understand is our government at every level has discarded its fundamental limits, turned predatory upon the very body it was Constituted to serve, and is actively on the hunt for every one of us. And next time resist getting personal with me in your posts -- it not only lowers the tone here, it just ousts you as being childish.
"...our sense of fair play which dictates a fair state-individual balance by requiring the government to leave the individual alone until good cause is shown for disturbing him and by requiring the government in its contest with the individual to shoulder the entire load..." -- Murphy v. Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, 378 U.S. 52, 55 (1964)
zodiac:
He was not only arrested for the marijuana but for the oustanding warrants. You get it now?
<<The hard truth sheep like you fail to understand is our government at every level has discarded its fundamental limits, turned predatory upon the very body it was Constituted to serve, and is actively on the hunt for every one of us>>
Impressive post, Killer but.....you're making a mountain out of a molehill. This dude was stopped for some sort of a traffic related thing - could have been as mundane as a broken tail light. Metro found marijuana in his car. They then ran his plate and found he had outstanding warrants. This Suge guy obviously never paid previous violations and warrants went out. Bingo!!! He is taken into custody and goes to jail because of these warrants. That is how it is done in Las Vegas (and just about anywhere else).
Most people pay their traffic citations. Some don't especially if there are multiple citations. They are like this guy. Can't be bothered. When I did the traffic citations at my Vegas firm, I KNOW that Metro will bust you for any outstanding warrants. Not necessarily will they "book" you, but you will be hauled in and until you pay up, you stay there. They don't look the other way.
This "Could be on The Maury Show" Brother had SEVERAL warrants out for his arrest. That says it all. It has nothing to do with the gov't or police trampling our rights. You either pay your tickets or warrants go out and if caught, you go to jail. THAT is THE law. Very easy to interpret and understand.
@KillerB
If you obey the laws of land, pay your taxes, pay your parking tickets..you'll breeze thru life. Are there instances where people are treated unjustly? Of course. That's the reality of any society. Does that mean you start changing every law on the books because .0001% get treated unfairly? I'm interested to know exactly what laws you want banished from the books? All of them? Across the board?
"This dude was stopped for some sort of a traffic related thing - could have been as mundane as a broken tail light. Metro found marijuana in his car. They then ran his plate and found he had outstanding warrants."
Det_Munch -- if I recall correctly from another Discussion, you're the guy who works for the cops, posting here on the taxpayers dime. It's no surprise you conveniently skipped the part about the unwarranted search and seizure. Until they're spanked, the local cops skip over it as inconsequential. Despite their oaths to support, defend and protect those limits, the Vegas cop attitude is the reverse of what it's supposed to be -- we're expected to fear them.
"I'm interested to know exactly what laws you want banished from the books?"
TomdD -- since no laws have been cited here, and because I repeatedly post the particulars of the Constitutions fascists like you repeatedly ignore, remind me exactly how I'm supposed to accept this police state you want to live in?
"The Fuhrer is always right." -- Joachim von Ribbentrop, the 1939 Konigsberg address
You do a dis-service to those who lived thru the holocaust when you call the USA a "police state". Extreme dis-service. Insulting. Ridiculous.
Tom: Can the words 'police state' only be in reference to the Nazi's? Good lord. Insulting, ridiculous, go back to watching Rachel Maddow.
My point is you have no idea what a police state is if you equate an individual being pulled over with numerous unpaid parking violations and getting arrested for it..patted down and found to be in possession of marijuana.
Get lost with your police state nonsense. You guys are always the ones to bring it up, then complain about the historical significance of such accusations. "the fuhrer is always right" I only respond to it. Got it? Land of the free, home of the Brave. If you don't like it, try China.
As I said, I'm not the one posting the Nazi quotes. Go complain to KillerB.
"You do a dis-service to those who lived thru the holocaust when you call the USA a "police state"
TomD -- almost didn't see your latest flame hiding there in the untrusted comments section.
"...Mr. Speaker, my subject today is whether America is a police state. I'm sure the large majority of Americans would answer this in the negative. Most would associate military patrols, martial law and summary executions with a police state, something obviously not present in our everyday activities. However, those with knowledge of Ruby Ridge, Mount Carmel and other such incidents may have a different opinion." -- Rep. Ron Paul, from a June 27, 2002, speech on the floor of the House
