The UNLV football coaching staff has been rearranged with third-year coach Bobby Hauck moving assistant coach Brent Myers to offensive coordinator and J.D. Williams to defensive coordinator.
Myers, who will continue coaching the UNLV tight ends, replaces Rob Phenicie as the offensive coordinator. Phenicie will stay in his role as quarterbacks coach.
Williams, a former NFL first round draft pick who played in four Super Bowls with the Buffalo Bills, will continue in his role as the secondary coach. He replaces Kraig Paulson at coordinator, with Paulson staying as the Rebels’ outside linebackers coach and being elevated to assistant head coach.
Each of Hauck’s assistants from last year’s team will return — a rarity in college football.
“These changes will allow us to freshen our approach on both sides of the football,” Hauck said in a statement. “They also mean we will have important continuity at all of our position groups as we progress into next season.”
UNLV posted a 2-10 record in 2011, scoring less than 20 points in 10 games in averaging 17.2 points per game. Defensively, the Rebels surrendered 40.4 points per game.
Spring practice begins March 12.

long overdue... Ray what is your opinion of Brent?
This is ridiculous!! The person who was responsible for the inept defense last year is now the ass head coach?! hauck is not a division I coach and 2011-12 should be his last year if he has another 2 win season! Rebels no longer needs to be the laughing stock or whipping boy of the MWC.
Rats leaving a sinking ship.
Hopefully the schedule is dumbed down enough so that Hauck can actually win his much vaunted third game.
When does Hauck go?
Hey Brian: I'm a big believer in Hauck, so I have to be confident in the move. While the offense was a mess last year, the Rebels' ground attack was actually respectable. That's a good starting point moving forward. They need to win next year, Hauck's third year.
give hauck a chance. sanford left him with no talent. with some decent qb play we could have won a couple of more games. hopefully the transfers from colorado and usc help.
A case of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. The football program cost the Nevada taxpayers each year in a sport that is supposed to be a revenue producer. It is time to think about dropping football at UNLV until we can afford it.
Ray Brewer, shouldn't you at least feign objectivity when it comes to Hauck?
I was a big believer in Hauck until I observed his clock management skills (or lack thereof) and his use of "trick" plays.
I am really tired of people saying that Sanford left the cupboard bare. If that is all you have as praise for Hauck then you my friend are in denial.
Tired of seeing comments about Sanford leaving UNLV with no talent. That's pure garbage. Sanford gave him 8 local recruits! Kids with a lot of potential and talent that Hauck & company have yet to develop and tap! I hope this change works!
Hauck is doing the same thing Sanford did...writing off his first two seasons by playing a ton of underclassmen on both sides of ball. I get that because it paid off for Sanford too in yrs 3 & 4....he just couldnt get to 6 wins for a variety of reasons most notably Defense. The difference is that Hauck did come into a better situation than Sanford did talent wise but that talent didnt match his MO. Hauck wants to grind out games & play conservative, run the ball, burn clock & try and keep the D off the field. Which left our best weapons Payne & Johnson woefully under utilized & with Herring playing so erratic it was game over if we got behind. The ground game was much improved and the Def, although not very stout, did generate more TOs so there is hope...because we are very, very young. But still, you cant lose to Souther Utah, you cant get shut out & lose to Reno by 40pts, you cant lose to UNM, and you cant lose every game by 30pts plus. I can stomach a 3 or 4 win season...but we damn well better be competitive in every single game from here on out.
Absolutely amazing, everybody was complaining about the coordinators last year, and now that something has been done about it, everyone feels the need to complain about that too! I will always support the rebels, and I trust in Hauck to step up this season. All or nothing baby, UNLV!
Bleed,
I am extremely happy they fired the two coaches. I just wish they had fired Hauck.
I am glad that you support the Rebels, I do as well. Supporting the team doesn't mean blind acceptance of what direction the team is heading in.
Well said Heretic! And Go Rebels...Please do better this year!
So the guy who coached the defense that was 3rd worst in the country, 443.2 ypg., gets a promotion?
This is embarrassing.
Please drop this program. I would love to see a UNLV Mens Volleyball team that sells out the Cox Pavilion instead of this annual waste of taxpayer money.
