What happened to conserving water? I belong to an HOA. We were told by the Southern Nevada Water Authority to get rid of our grass and put in desert landscape to conserve water. We did, and our water rates were raised. Now we are seeing two new water parks on the horizon! Where are the gazillions of gallons of water coming from? Oh, wait. We have been told that it will be recycled water. OK, however, it has to come from someplace first, right? What is wrong with this picture? What is really going on?

In reply to Peggy Bacon; good point in your letter to the editor. There is a large water usage difference since I switched from grass to desert landscaping. However, my monthly bill does not reflect anything near this huge reduction in usage.
I think we'll just have to continue to be slapped in the face with the "punish success and reward failure system".
There is a lot of lost water due to evaporation at a water park
This is flat out dumb in the dry Desert air
Our civic leaders are fools to support this
Stop making the DESERT BLOOM
Our State and local elected officials are not serious about water conservation. They give it lip service and then fall on their faces with the follow up. We're using water faster than it can be replenished and have for years. So far, God and Mother Nature have come to the rescue. BUT..sooner rather than later Americans, not just Nevadans, will be faced with the reality of diminishing water. Hopefully, we have a better plan B than Boehner and the GOP on the fiscal cliff of 2013.

Perhaps the water authority is counting on the third straw in lake Mead to solve our water needs. And is not to concerned about two new water parks currently under construction.
When it's finished in early 2013 the so called "third straw" into lake Mead will keep water flowing to Las Vegas dispite drought and shortages on the Colorado river.
Just step right up and thank your local Clark County Planning Commission for putting their "stamp of approval" on such projects here in a water scarce desert. Next election, put your "stamp of disapproval" by NOT voting these lawmakers into office.
SANITY and competence is too much to ask for in our society and government these days.
Blessings and Peace,

Author, you were conned. Don't you realize that?
Well, looks like some people just don't get it. "Conserving" water is pushed in Las Vegas to make sure the business interests have enough water to continue doing business. Oh and don't think about conserving electricity either, NV Energy will just go to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada and ask for a rate hike to make up the difference in the revenue lost by people doing the right thing and "conserving". This is after they are making a pretty good profit already.
Conserving anything is a sham.

I have no children, somebody else has 5. Whose family uses more resources?
.
You drive a hybrid, Fred drives a Hummer. Who uses more resources.
.
Daniel Greenspun used nearly 9 millions gallons of water in 2008. The average family of four uses about 90,000 gallons. Is that fair?
.
Would you rather have another Dotty's, two liquor stores, and a cigarette store open in their place? The water parks will give teenagers summer jobs, give families a new well needed activity and place to go, and will add value to our city as a destination.
Won't catch me in that urine contaminated cess pool...
summerof69 good post agreed.
If the Moderator would permit me one comment off topic on conservation but related to the water parks: Here it is.
Did we not see on the news that the concrete and cement has been laid for the foundations and structures of this park over the last few days. And did not the temperature in the local areas drop below freezing [32 degrees Fahrenheit] these nights [way below]? And doesn't proper cement procedures say that cement and concrete should not be laid in temps below 50 degrees? And safety inspectors approved the laying of cement for the builders to do so?
A few years from now when the structure is compromised, will they remember and who will be blamed?
