Teen arrested with rifle at Las Vegas high school campus

Updated Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 | 6:02 p.m.

A teenage former student was arrested today on the campus of the Northwest Career and Technical Academy after authorities found an unloaded rifle in his car. Capt. Ken Young of the Clark County School District Police said a parent alerted authorities to the gun, which was visible in the back seat of a car owned by Jake Howell, 18. Officers found ammunition in the car as well as several small knives. Young said that there's no evidence Howell, who was apparently at the northwest Las Vegas high school visiting friends, was planning anything and that he made no threats. The ...

  1. The NRA works really fast! Congratulations Messers Pierre and Reid on putting your solution to work in such a timely fashion.

  2. "The SKS automatic rifle was not registered, although in Nevada a gun under 12 inches in length must be not registered."

    LOL

May want to submit that line back for review.

  3. I say you or whoever who should post a picture of these people committing crimes. The picture of the person commiting the crime needs to be spread around the valley, and more..perhaps state wide and also to California, Arizona and Utah..we need to see who are doing these things..and post info about the person, or persons as well..this crap needs to STOP and the parents need to take action if it is their children...Metro and Henderson cops need to support this. This is not a matter of human rights, it is is a matter of MY life and yours...I like my life, I don't know about you???

  4. "The SKS automatic rifle was not registered, although in Nevada a gun over 12 inches in length doesn't require registration."

    LOL

May want to re-submit for review - better yet, delete it - it's inaccurate and adds no value.

  5. "The SKS automatic rifle was not registered, although in Nevada a gun under 12 inches in length doesn't require registration."

D'Urso -- you should get your facts straight. An SKS is a semi-auto forefunner of the AK-47. I know, I have one.

Despite the media-fueled hysteria, the real question is whether or not he had the weapon "for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes." It's what our Declaration of Rights protects.

"Fear is the foundation of most governments." - John Adams "Thoughts on Government" (1776)

  6. EVERY gun in Nevada should be registered!

  7. LOL

KillerB to the rescue -- after all they're just reporters, while propaganda sells better than facts.

    Clearly the charges are unconstitutional.

    : {

  8. "EVERY gun in Nevada should be registered!"

Registration - the precursor to confiscation.

    : {

  9. I agree that the reporter is almost criminally negligent in accuracy of representation.

The has never been any such weapon as the "SKS automatic rifle".

Despite variants being produced in over 19 countries, the "Samozaryadnyj Karabin sistemy Simonova, 1945" has never has a fully automatic version, the basic design of the internal 10 round box magazine making any such attempt academic at best.

Since the SKS does not support high capacity removable magazines (or any removable magazine for that matter) the reporter is having to take extensive artistic liberty to describe it as an "assault rifle"

  10. Next up: Police will discover stockpiles of "assault muskets" at local museums.

  11. "EVERY gun in Nevada should be registered!"

BryanG -- why exactly? You think the real criminals will comply? Like the biggest criminals for providing assault rifles in bulk to the bad guys is our very own federal government -- and we just elected the #2 guy responsible, who then rehired the #1 guy responsible. Can you say "fast and furious"?

"KillerB to the rescue -- after all they're just reporters, while propaganda sells better than facts."

Harley -- ain't that the truth. Makes one wonder what else was made up.

"Despite variants being produced in over 19 countries, the "Samozaryadnyj Karabin sistemy Simonova, 1945" has never has a fully automatic version..."

wendor -- I'm impressed! Though mine has a 9-round internal clip, which is best loaded with a stripper clip. Using them is almost much a pain as finding them.

"I think TV is very educational. Every time someone turns on a TV, I go in the other room and read." -- Groucho Marx

  12. I haven't fired one in about twenty years but as I remember:
An SKS is not an assault rifle. Anyone who thinks it is either is ignorant or lying. It is a WWII vintage semi-automatic rifle or carbine with an attached magazine that holds no more than 10 rounds and is chambered for 7.62 x 39 MM cartridge. It is considered a short range firearm capable of minimum accuracy. The 123 grain cartridge averages about 2,300 fps at the muzzle. In essence, it is a relatively slow cartridge of minimum accuracy at close range achieving low power levels for a .30 caliber round. Like any firearm it is capable of achieving its intended purpose but less so than the average deer rifle. It is crude with loose tolerances which account for both its lack of accuracy and its reliability.

That the media continues to insist on calling everything above a pea shooter an assault rifle tells us two things. One, they are less knowledgable than they should be to inform the public and they are patently dishonest. When ignorance and ideological agenda are both used to deceive and misinform the public they serve the media are guilty of malice and forethought in their deception.

Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and our other founding fathers would be a frothing state over the misuse of the public trust, their only fiduciary duty.

  13. Tomorrow I'm going to drive my assault SUV to my assault office and pour a cup of assault coffee from my assault coffee pot. Then I'm going to use my assault MAC to look up assault prices for assault stocking stuffers.

Later my assault wife and I will go to our favorite assault dinner for an assault lunch. What I won't do tomorrow is to allow myself to insulted anymore by this imitation assault newspaper and its pretend assault reporters that fold, spindle and mutilate the truth in search of lazy yellow journalism. Of course this is only my assault opinion.

  14. Author,

"...The SKS automatic rifle was not registered, although in Nevada a gun over 12 inches in length doesn't require registration..."

    is a really dumb statement.

    And it was unloaded. Frightening.

Author, why on earth did you publish an article like this?

  15. "An SKS is not an assault rifle. . .It is a WWII vintage semi-automatic rifle or carbine with an attached magazine that holds no more than 10 rounds. . ."

BRASS -- it was the Russian counterpart to our M-1 carbine. I have one of those, too. Good call on our founders and today's pretenders.

"Author, why on earth did you publish an article like this?"

FreedomRadio -- I'm glad he did, it opened this Discussion. It's a bit disturbing D'Urso hasn't attempted to make the correction. Perhaps he's going by what Metro told him.

"After the coffee things ain't so bad." -- Henry Herbert Knibbs, cowboy poet, d. 1945

  16. Good Gawd...

What a shameless, hyper-sensational headline that belies the facts in evidence.

Mr. Sun ought to be ashamed of that one.

  17. No doubt this article came up short on factual information, and Commenters are calling the journalist out on it.

Just from personal experiences, teens growing up in rural areas, or from having families that enjoy recreational shooting, it doesn't surprise me that this TEEN simply did NOT think about it. He didn't think about it being a big NO-NO to possess, and transport a gun/weapon and ammunition onto a school campus, even being "locked up" inside his vehicle. That was truly a stupid and irresponsible mistake that now will follow him for many years into adulthood. Good grief!

Presently, news media sources have not disclosed the intention of this teen in respect to the weapon, only that the teen was visiting past teachers and peers at the school, which I believe was his real intent, not to do any harm at the school. Stuff like this adds to the public paranoia and escalates fearful behaviors.

    Blessings and Peace,
    Star

  18. "...truly a stupid and irresponsible mistake that now will follow him for many years into adulthood. . .news media sources have not disclosed the intention of this teen in respect to the weapon, only that the teen was visiting past teachers and peers at the school, which I believe was his real intent, not to do any harm at the school. Stuff like this adds to the public paranoia and escalates fearful behaviors."

star -- so it's a "truly a stupid and irresponsible mistake" for a presumably responsible teen to exercise his Constitutional right to keep and bear a firearm? Considering how some past laws required every male 16 and older to do so, and how it was no big deal for some kids to actually bring a rifle to school as part of their duty to put meat on the family table, "public paranoia" is an accurate statement.

My kids survived Katrina so I paid attention. Despite the warm and fuzzy commercials of the military helping rescue survivors, the facts are far more chilling. The National Guard actually went door to door searching for guns to confiscate, and removed all weapons -- even cigarette lighters -- from those desperate to get into the Super Dome. As history shows those people were then unable to defend themselves where the situation degenerated to anarchy.

"I think you all know that I've always felt the nine most terrifying words in the English language are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'" -- the late President Ronald Reagan on YouTube @ http://youtu.be/xhYJS80MgYA

  19. NRA comes out and says that schools need better protection. This adult brings a semi-auto rifle, ammo, and knifes to a school and gets arrested. Then, the gun nuts are raging mad the reporter didn't get the make, model, description of the gun correct. They then proceed to imagine the guys background, family, intent, and declares him the victim. This, one week after a mess murder at a school. You folks are very twisted.

  20. This article shows the danger of getting information from an ideological publication. It's as stupid as Piers Morgan saying he can buy an automatic at a grocery store. Face it, the left knows nothing of guns.

And the last commenter apparently neglected to notice (or, more likely, purposely omitted) the fact that the rifle was locked in a car, unloaded, and in plain sight, which makes any thought of nefarious purposes a bit ridiculous.

D'Urso shows journalistic malpractice here, not just journalistic neglect. Obviously, the Sun has no wall between "news" and "editorial".

  21. Howzie: I simply stated the facts. You are still stating nothing more than your imagined intent of someone you never met.

  22. Can we agree to err on the side of caution, at least at schools? Here's the scenario the gun nuts on this post are promoting: guy owns gun, no problem, ammo, no problem. Knifes, no problem. Brings all of them to a school, no problem......keep going....the only time it becomes a problem is when the trigger gets pulled on a five year old. Then there wasn't enough security. Sorry, I'm ALL for throwing the book at folks who show up at schools with guns. Maybe you should be too.

  23. It isn't illegal to carry a rifle (which isn't an assault weapon)here in Nevada. It is to carry one on school grounds. So he was arrested.

The problem is not with the police; it's with the article and the comments of the rabid 2nd amendment haters. The media and those who would deny our rights don't know the facts (for example that semi-autos don't "spray" bullets)

  24. "...the gun nuts are raging mad the reporter didn't get the make, model, description of the gun correct."

CreatedEQL -- it's evident either you didn't read the article or you're just another one of those who makes it up as you go along. As I plainly stated, and others who know have supported, an SKS is not automatic. If this boy had brought a machine gun to school or anywhere else that's one thing. He didn't. And nobody posting on this side "raged" about anything. Get a grip on reality then try again.

"...how little does the common herd know of the nature of right and truth." - Socrates in Plato's "Euthyphro" (399 B.C.E.?)

  25. My problem is the notion of "denying our rights". Right now you can purchase a semi-automatic weapon, multiple large clips, body armor, and ballistic helmets. Then, you can put it all on and until you pull the trigger, you haven't broken the law. Trying to bring some sanity to the situation prior to the trigger pull becomes "denying our rights". Lots of rights guaranteed by the constitution have reasonable restrictions placed on them, and its time to reign in, not eliminate, which guns and accessories are made available.

  26. Lets use the second amendment to start limiting the free press from not reporting all the news just the selective stories (like they do now). How come they don't go after the Movie industries with more than 3/4 of all movies out every year that are violent with gun use.Lets see how fast the reporters Cry about their second amendment right being violated.

  27. The shame is that the anti-gun crowd focuses on an inanimate object as the root of all evil rather than acknowledging human behavior as the problem. That of course goes along with their never taking responsibility for anything as evidenced by the majority of legislative initiatives they put forth. This will never change and we must accept that. It is therefore our charge to do the opposite and put the onus on human behavior and the preventions and solutions to our human failures where it rightfully belongs. Potentially well meaning but poorly reasoned solutions almost always result in few positive results while creating a mountain of unintended consequences that sap the creativity and personal freedoms of all.

  28. The same media example as on the first few days of the school shooting. Facts do not sell news.
    1. Nancy lanza was killed at the school with her class.
    2. Ryan Lanza was the shooter.
    3. The shooter was "buzzed" in at the school.
    4. The shooter only had 2 9mm handguns and left the assault rifle in his car.

Not one of these headline grabbing statements was true but the same ones were used by CNN, Fox News, NBC, CBS, ABC and probably many more on radio.

The news media has become more of a reality TV show than what news once was.

  29. "Lets use the second amendment to start limiting the free press..."

simplysaid -- you obviously know nothing about the Second Amendment. Look it up and try again.

"The struggle for liberty has been a struggle against Government. The essential scheme of our Constitution and Bill of Rights was to take Government off the backs of people." -- Columbia Broadcasting Sys., Inc. v. Democratic Nat'l Comm., 412 U.S. 94, 162 (1973), Justice Douglas concurring

  30. Hey, let's gut the 1st, 4th and 5th too! I mean, think of all the good outlawing religion, allowing government to search anyone they want, regulate the press....why, they'll be no bad guys anymore!

I think the press should have a 24-hour waiting period and be subject to background checks.

  31. The headlines should have read "Law abiding citizen arrested for keeping his gun safely locked up" the arrest was due to his car being in an area that was decleared to be not subject to the 2nd amendment of the US Consistution.

Thank god that guns don't kill childern, if they could it might have walked into the school and started killing childern and NOTHING could have been done to stop it because the government prevented anyone from being able to defend these childern at our schools.

Demand that the rights guaranteed under our 2nd amendment stop being infringed on in our schools, it is causing our childern to be left unprotected! This is another case of laws being passed with very good intentions, but the unintended consequences are now killing our childern!

  32. Funny thing is the SKS is just as good as an AK .. but people make a big deal about a plastic embellish gun.

Kid used to have rifle ranges at schools.

  33. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but he obviously wasn't a law abiding citizen if he was arrested for breaking the law. The patriot act eliminated our protection against illegal search and seizure, and owning a gun puts you at 4x risk of that gun harming you rather than protecting you. Other amendments such as freedom of speech are restricted as well. No shouting fire in a movie theater. Your arguments are shrill nonsense and only make the majority of people more convinced that we need to reign in the extreme elements. That NRA speech was gold, count on some laws being passed now.

  34. "Funny thing is the SKS is just as good as an AK .. but people make a big deal about a plastic embellish gun."

mred -- your ignorance is showing. "AK" stands for "Automatic Kalishnikov" [sic]. And neither are plastic.

"...he obviously wasn't a law abiding citizen if he was arrested for breaking the law. The patriot act eliminated our protection against illegal search and seizure..."

CreatedEQL -- and you continue to be obviously ignorant. Constitutions trump laws every time. The Patriot Act eliminated only the parts of the Bill of Rights sheep like you are willing to give up.

"...a legislative act contrary to the Constitution is not law." -- Marbury v. Madison, 1 Cranch 137, 177 (1803)

  35. Killer: I don't live in your reality. We have a constitution that separates church and state, and dollar bills that say "in god we trust". Law makers are always trying to introduce more religious beliefs into law. We protected from illegal search, yet have the patriot act. All men created equal, unless you are in a marginalized group. Gays cant marry. In day to day reality, I'm not governed by the constitution, I'm governed by local laws. In a theoretical world on paper, im governed by the constitution, but thats as far as it goes. As far as "sheep like me", I never voted for Bush who gave us the Patriot act. I never vote for republicans because they increase the distance between laws and the constitution rather than bringing them them closer. Separation of church, equality, search and seizure, you name it, the conservatives move away from constitution.. EXCEPT in the case of the 2nd, that they want at all costs.

  36. IN 1973 I was in eight grade, I took a 12 ga. shotgun to school. I walked in the front doors with it in full view, through crowded halls, nobody looked twice. I took it to the shop where I refinished the stock. Some weeks thereafter several teachers and about 30 boys went to the range where we shot several hundred rounds of ammunition that we had reloaded in a school sponsored mini course. I took along the 12 ga. and a .38 snub nose. It was fun and educational. It was safe because we had been taught gun safety and had been raised to KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG.

  37. For KillerB: The CCSD is very clear about the rules in regards to bringing onto school property weapons of any form. The teen is a former CCSD student and had prior knowledge to the fact. All students and parents are informed of these rules and district policy and sign acknowledging this each and every year of enrollment. This is present case.

In regards to the past, sure, I grew up during an age kids carried their pocket knives to school, or after school did target practice with their BB guns, air rifles, or, as the individual case may be, their 22s. Even my own children grew up around sport shooting. To date, never a problem.

If you are arguing about it being a Constitutional Right to carry a weapon onto a public school campus, guess such would have to be settled in court. Here in Las Vegas, people are much better off NOT having everyone who wanted to, carrying a weapon at a public school due to safety issues. As a teacher, I much rather be working in a classroom where students are NOT sitting there with a weapon in their possession.

    Blessings and Peace,
    Star

  38. "The CCSD is very clear about the rules in regards to bringing onto school property weapons of any form."

star -- since the CCSD is a government institution it's bound by the Constitutions. As you may have seen that doesn't stop conflicting laws, rules & regulations from being passed and enforced.

I understand your point about being a teacher and needing to be safe, but that misses the larger issue. All power is dangerous when given to beginners, especially the young. Responsible parents don't let kids play with matches before they're ready to handle fire and respect its uncontrolled consequences. Strangely that kind of reasoning is absent from most of these Discussions here.

I'd also point out both Sandy Hook and Columbine were gun-free zones. The people who dutifully obey those gun control laws are usually the victims. As you can see below, the point has long ago been settled by the highest court. I recommend Penn & Teller's "Gun Control BS" -- it's on YouTube

"Where rights secured by the Constitution are involved, there can be no rulemaking or legislation which would abrogate them." -- Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436, 491 (1966)

  39. I'm hardly defending the "former student" who brought a firearm onto school property, but who on the LVSun staff wrote this article? Woody Woodpecker?

  40. The bottom line is you can talk about all the gun facts first second and third amendments and ccsd regulations you want to but i guarantee all of that will vanish when someone pulls a trigger and thats your child in front of him. Lets not lose site of the BIG picture.T
