Ten years ago, when I went back to my old high school in Chicago to check on plans for a 50-year anniversary, I was shocked to see that students had to enter through metal detectors. There were two police officers present, one in front of the school and one in a police car cruising the area during the morning and lunch hours. Las Vegas students have brought guns into the schools because of irresponsible parents’ failure to secure their weapons. This represents a tragedy about to happen. Schools should be made safe.
Entry doors and classroom doors should always be security doors. Not doors with cheap glass that can be easily enter
In this event to goal is to stymie and slow down the killer - police response was fast and work.

Agreed and at least one armed guard if we don't arm and train teachers to shoot.

Having lived 90 miles north of Chicago for some 50 years, I know the mindset of Las Vegans' and those who reside in the "Windy City" are quite different. Chicago is a pig sty; graft, bribery and corruption rule. Gangs run rampant and the carnage on the streets is horrific. It couldn't have anything to do with the Dumbocratic machine that has run the city for years, could it? You know, the folks who "feel your pain?" Lazy and ignorant; Chicagoians have exactly the kind of government they deserve: an unresponsive and uncaring one! They made their bed when they chose Rahm Emanuel. Now they must live with him and his "let no crisis be wasted" philosophy.
I saw an interesting piece on the news last night. It involved a school district in Texas that allows it's faculty to carry concealed weapons to work. They are trained in firearms use prior to being allowed to carry concealed. How all this is paid for wasn't mentioned; I imagine through some sort of taxation at the local level. It seems a cheaper security measure than retrofitting every entrance door at every school in Clark County with metal detectors and bullet proof doors. The teachers in that Texas school district were not interviewed, and the number of armed teachers on school property was kept private. The school district head was interviewed, and said he had already received requests for guidance from other school districts about how to implement the program.
Talk about irony: Classrooms are run by teacher union thugs who indoctrinate kids with socialist ideology and now you guys want to arm them?
Metal detectors, guards, barricade doors, concealed weapons. All in our schools! Brought to you by the NRA and conservative backers. Shame we didn't have sensible gun control all along. The lax gun control helps create the scummy conditions we live in. Ironically, it then makes folks feel compelled to purchase a gun to protect them from the scummy conditions and we start the self perpetuating downward slide.
Most school districts tend to utilize metal detectors and enhanced security measures on a case by case basis, sensitive to the needs of that neighborhood school.
Today's schools have layers of security, where both school staff and students are trained and in many cases, practice routinely.
Be assured that school districts are closely following the recent event at Sandy Hook Elementary School, comparing areas where they may improve school security, and are immediately implementing security improvements.
When it comes to arming teachers in classrooms, that decision SHOULD include public input, where all the concerns are put on the table and discussed by all parties, and most certainly our community's parents and families of students should weigh in on this important decision.

We do have metal detectors in all of our airports.So what's wrong with putting them in our schools to protect our little innocent children from crazy people? I can't think of a better way for protecting our kids.
It's funny to see the republicans wanting to take away more freedom so they can keep their assault weapons.
I do not agree with arming teachers. What I would suggest is not only metal detectors but armed security on the premises. This would be the best approach to curbing crimes like this. Probably will never solve it all but its not an expensive solution, easily implementated and a step in the right direction.

chuck, it helps if you read what I wrote and to whom in order to understand my amusement. Nice try, though, in attempting to make it look like I find the shootings "funny." Get a grip, man.
Ms. K I did read what you wrote and to whom and don't think anyone either republican, democrat, liberal or conservative think anything is ironic or funny so please maybe you should "Get a Grip". Try leaving politics out of a disater like this. You priove no point other than your personnal agenda.

Your basic comprehension skills are in need of improvement. There is nothing funny about mass murder. What is funny is people like you.
So who exactly is manning these metal detectors? 500-1500 kids per school means you would need 3-4 detectors per school and the man power to man those.
Also most schools have multiple entrances because the main doors can't handle a flood of 1000 students at once.
I do like how people who have never worked in a school know how to run them.
There are many schools that have metal detectors now. The bigger question is would it have made a difference in this case, I believe the answer is no. Short of locking down doors and posting guards any school is at risk, for that matter any pubilc place, institution, etc. We are lucky not to have car bombs,,,yet,, crazy violence seems to be a worldwide problem. Here in the USA we could go back to the 50's- 60's where kids had 2 parents, play outside and ADD and Ridlin where not invented. It is not going to happen so this is the new normal, sad as it sounds. It is not about gun control, it is about parental responsibility and the goverment will never step in and force that issue. After all, freedom is the theme here, to live and die.
