Woman found dead in fire at apartment complex

Smoking is believed to have caused a fire that took the life of one woman and sent another to the hospital, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

Firefighters were called to the Sunrise Garden Apartments, 3601 El Conlon Ave., near Valley View Boulevard and Sahara Avenue, about 8:59 p.m. on Friday. Heavy flames and smoke were coming from the second floor, and more help was called, officials said.

As firefighters went up the stairs, they found a woman who was unresponsive, officials said. She was taken to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Another woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control within 10 minutes, officials said. The fire damaged eight apartments and caused about $200,000 in damage, officials said.

The fire is under investigation, but fire officials believe the blaze was caused by smoking.
