Today’s once-in-a-lifetime, magical calendar date -- the last for nearly another century -- could spell a bonanza for our city’s wedding chapels. The next three numbers align on Jan. 1, 2101!
Couples who are superstitious about the good luck of today’s date have poured in from around the world to the Strip for marriage and vow-renewal ceremonies, some from as far away as Australia and Sweden, to our epicenter of bliss. The “I Do’s” began at 12 minutes after midnight this morning.
More than 7,500 weddings are expected in Las Vegas today, a huge increase over the last year numerical alignment. ABC’s “Good Morning America” even reported today that C-sections have been arranged in Las Vegas hospitals for 12 minutes after noon so that babies will have the birth date.
“GMA” has been broadcasting live all morning from the Little White Wedding Chapel where Britney Spears was married for less than 48 hours to high school sweetheart Jason Alexander in January 2004. Today, more than 70 couples have booked vows at the chapel.
Since 1908, 5 million people have been married here. The Clark County Clerk’s Office reported 3,500 applications for advance wedding licenses on 11/11/11, and everybody is expecting last year’s record to be broken today. That’s partly because in Chinese numerology, 1 is a yang and 2 is a yin, meaning perfect balance for new couples.
The marital buzz is everywhere: Twelve winning couples in a KOMP FM Radio contest were set to wed in a mass ceremony at noon today in Chapel of the Flowers. Then the lucky couples are off to the downtown D hotel for a reception and free tickets for the mystery dinner show “Marriage Can Be Murder”-- you play with the meaning of that dichotomy!
Bar Back USA has a $1,212,120 wedding at Caesars Palace, giving one high-roller couple a three-night stay, free-flowing Dom Perignon, dinner at Guy Savoy and a ceremony and reception at the Frank Gehry-designed Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health downtown; a portion of proceeds go to our Keep Memory Alive. Bar Back also has less-expensive wedding packages at Caesars.
My pal Michael Boychuck at his salon Color in Caesars told me it has become the busiest day of the year for brides, with appointments exceeding Valentine’s Day.
Real-estate tycoon Donald Trump, who is getting ready for his 2012 Miss Universe Pageant next Wednesday at Planet Hollywood, has a wedding package at his Trump International Hotel. Priced at $2,012 for a couple and 12 guests, they receive an elope ceremony, an overnight stay, champagne and 12 chocolate-covered strawberries with a bouquet of 12 white roses.
If you’re a guy without a bride today, Madame Tussaud’s at the Venetian will cut admission to $12 for your interactive photo posed with Rihanna, Madonna or Selena Gomez.
Push the button so the conveyor belt of weddings rolls smoothly all day long in Las Vegas, the Wedding Capital of the World. Aren’t we also the Divorce Capital of the World? As a wise saint once said, “Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.”
