Another limousine business out at McCarran; county commissioners consider ways to help

Updated Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012 | 12:22 p.m.

Limousine businesses serving McCarran International Airport are hurting, a year after the airport cut from five to four the number of limo companies at the airport. Business has gotten so bad, in fact, that Jacob's Transportation stopped operation at midnight Friday. Now just three companies serve the airport. At Tuesday’s regular meeting, Clark County commissioners, who oversee McCarran, discussed how to help the operators. Commissioner Susan Brager suggested lowering the maximum guaranteed rent the limousines pay the airport by 35 percent. Randy Walker, McCarran’s director of aviation, said limousine business was down 21 percent from a year ago. Walker also ...

  1. Maybe taxi authority is to blame when they cave in to Mark James of Frias to allow more taxi on the rod, when they knew is no call for it.

  2. Now that the banks ripped off the country, every business wants to be bailed out. The Commission should worry more about bailing out their constituents. Every resident of Clark County should get a 35% reduction in all their taxes (from assessments to sales) before these greedy businesses get a penny.

  3. Unauthorized hustling in Terminal One from drivers who work for companies that have not paid for airport booths is costing these companies millions of dollars per year. That is no exaggeration.

Those responsible for enforcing the "no soliciting" rule inside T1 are either the most incompetent employees on the planet- or as many suspect- they have ulterior motivation which allows it to continue.

Certain drivers from certain companies are absolute fixtures inside T1 and have operated for years with impunity. A common scene is drivers with rolled up paper signs verbally engaging dozens of people around luggage carousels (epsecially 5&7) that stand out considerably from drivers who are holding signs, waiting for clients who have made legitimate reservations.

If a frequent traveler such as myself can figure this out, why have these companies not demanded a crackdown on these hustlers? Upon returning from business trips, I am frequently illegally solicited for rides- often by repeat offenders!

A conservative estimate is that these hustlers cost each authorized company 10 rides per day. Every day. That adds up.

  4. Mr. Miller,

If you are a property owner you already have your lower taxes. My property tax is half of what it was 5 years ago.

These "greedy businesses" as you call them are who provides the jobs in this town. Need to keep them going or you won't have a job.
