Proposal will seek to open Metro’s books on fatal shootings by police

Updated Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 | 12:09 p.m.

Two county commissioners who oversee the Metro Police budget will offer an alternative to the coroner’s inquest system at the County Commission meeting Tuesday. Commissioners Steve Sisolak and Larry Brown were still working out the details Monday, but Sisolak said the general idea would be to get all of Metro’s materials from an investigation of an officer-involved shooting and to disseminate that information to the public. The system would not, however, use a public ombudsman to ask questions for families of the deceased, which commissioners approved earlier this year and, despite legal challenges, was upheld in the Nevada Supreme Court. ...

  1. These people that push for these or are at the forefront do so because they have an agenda. Money. From police departments. Period. They would prefer to subject a officer to shameful badgering with jest ions that are less than relevant. It's is tantamount to a surgeon going before a malpractice board with citizens sitting on the board who have zero medical experience. The fact is 99.9 percent of any police shootings will not be considers criminal. That a hard for some to take. That doesn't mean they were appropriate but it does meant they weren't criminal. There's a difference. The proper forum is civil court. Metro has been found liable there before.

  2. In addition, the fact is the DIstrict Attorney ca determine I minutes if a police shooting is criminal. It's like this...an officer in the course of his job will almost NEVER be criminal. Is sort of hard to show INTENT with a officer responding to a call or similar. This doesn't mean the officer acted appropriately though. Just not criminal...still these idiot commissioners can't get that and are pandering to votes. Sickening. Officers are human beings. They camake mistakes. But mistakes typically aren't criminal.

  3. Clark County Commissioners should do an on line survey to find out how people living here in the valley, really feel about metro.

  4. Metro is just a bunch of thugs, the fact that they have a badge doesn't mean they can go around killing people. Just wait until they kill someone in your family.

  5. The uninformed and uneducated in our society believe that the taxpayers should pay when a cop murders an unarmed citizen. This means you Star Wars guy.
