Marcus Williams and Arie McQuaig combined for five touchdowns and the Durango High football team rushed for 340 yards in the first half Friday against host Bonanza for a convincing 54-6 victory in the season opener for both teams.
Anthony Collins added a pair of touchdowns for Durango, Gene Germaine returned a fumble for a touchdown and Brett Neighbors had a 99-yard punt return for a score.
Durango won’t have much time to enjoy its victory. Next week, they host Centennial in what should be one of the top games of the week. Both schools are ranked in the Sun’s top-10 and Centennial knocked off Palo Verde, 24-20, Friday.
“It was good for our kids to get some momentum for what’s going to be a real tough game against Centennial,” Durango coach Matt Gerber said.
