It's a "turn back the hands of time" weekend for Las Vegas entertainment. It's a step back into the last century for shows this weekend as a DJ invasion competes with today's modern electronic sounds. There may well be a lot of music fans over the next 72 hours asking the simple question: "Who?"
There's everybody from Jack Jones, Tanya Tucker and Huey Lewis to Jay and the Americans and even Chubby Checker, who invented "The Twist."
The music weekend kicks off with the Symphonic Rock show by Brody Dolyniukand Yellow Brick Road at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Our roving Editor at Large John Katsilometes has chronicled Brody's trials and tribulations in bringing his symphony of rock to the forefront of the Las Vegas entertainment scene. Read one of his stories here.
Rock and roll turns to a legendary veteran with Sammy Hagar setting up camp at the Hard Rock Hotel all weekend. He will be honored in the all-star, third annual Vegas Rocks! Magazine Awards on Sunday night at the Joint.
This year, as publisher Sally Steele celebrates her magazine's eighth anniversary, the awards will be telecast live for the first time on the AXS TV cable network created by Mark Cuban and Ryan Seacrest. The network was Mark's former HD TV channel.
In addition to Van Halen's and Chicken Foot's Hagar, rockers David Coverdale from Whitesnake, Michael Schenker from the Scorpions, Geoff Tate from Queensryche and Vinnie Paul from Pantera and Hellyeah will pick up awards. Hagar gets the Voice of Rock Award and Coverdale the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Numerous rockers are set to walk the red carpet and perform, plus porn king Ron Jeremy will make an appearance. All the stars — including local headliners Chris Phillips of Zowie Bowie and Stratosphere resident Frankie Moreno — will go onstage for a grand finale to wrap up the night. Music industry folks say the splashy event will add another page to rock and roll's history.
Even hip-hop phenomenon Nelly is at the Hard Rock's Rehab party on Sunday!
Topping off the fun will be comedy kings George Lopez and former "Saturday Night Live" great Kevin Nealon, celebrity chefs Emeril Lagasseand Alex Stratta and two sexy stunners: "True Blood" and "Californication" actress Camilla Luddington will be at Chateau Nightclub & Gardens at the Paris and Khloe Kardashian-Odom — with or without hubby Lamar Odom — will promote her new fragrance at Kardashian Khaos in the Mirage.
So dust off those '60s and '70s leather and chains outfits and dance to the decibels as we spin out this 78-45 rpm package we affectionately call the Royal Robin Rundown:
