Columnist Jon Ralston, Nevada's leading political commentator, is leaving the Las Vegas Sun after 12 years to create his own Internet-based commentary platform, Ralston and Sun Publisher Brian Greenspun announced today.
Ralston, whose provocative, three-times-a-week political columns have spared no one in Nevada politics, will leave the Sun on Aug. 31.
The Sun will continue to sponsor Ralston's nightly public affairs show "Face to Face With Jon Ralston," which airs on on KSNV Channel 3, Greenspun said.
"The Sun and Ralston combined to build a significant brand in political commentary that is unsurpassed in Nevada," Greenspun said. "After a dozen years, it is time for Jon to take that brand and strike out on his own.
"We thank him for his years of dedicated service to the Sun and we wish him nothing but success," Greenspun said.

It is a bold move, like starting one's own newspaper, but the message should not necessarily be the medium, and having the luxury of leaving the organizing to an established media outlet has its advantages. It could be easy to get lost on the Internet, in a forest of blogs. Will people, even those who follow Jon, go looking for his site?
I wish you success, Mr. Ralston, but sorry to see you leaving the Sun.
Good Luck Mr. Ralston!
Will continue to follow you to see what you can dig up.
Jon has the ability and experience to do good in journalism. Now if he could treat "guests" like humans, he could really make some moves.
Mr. Ralston,
I wish you all the best in your new endeavor. You will be missed. Very sorry to hear that you are leaving the Sun.
Wishing you lots of success in your new journey!

All the best of luck to you, Mr. Ralston, I'd bet you'll make it again. And it was my pleasure to read you, to watch your interviews, to follow your columns again and again. Man, you were really puttin' the pressure on and all you did has been so far and will continue to be... investigativ journalism of its finest.
And that's what we all need from day to day, from time to time: someone telling us the truth, tearing down the mask some people of public interest are wearing, even if it might be a little inconvenient for those people. Every reader has the right to learn the undisputed truth, every audience has the ability to watch when you have been telling it on "Face to Face" with Jon Ralston. Thanks a lot, Jon, keep it up.
Best wishes and kind regards
Chuck Norris
it was a good 12 year run Jon
rj claims he was ousted over the guinn reporting ..both Sun and Rj accounts can't be true. rj did not mention tv show was continuing...someone is lying and
i think his name rhymes with worm
He's no different than the other media in this town, when the powers to be tell you to shut up , you shut up. Every media in this country works the same way and Ralstons no different.

Ralston was just a loud mouth that didn't know when to shutup! I carefully avoided his articles and shows as they were the same old dribble. Oh well, good luck Ralston on your new endeavor. I won't go looking for it!
Good luck, Jon!
I wish Jon Ralston and Dana Gentry nothing but the best! Please do let us all know where we can find you next - and my sincere thanks for doing so many stories on our troops, military families and veterans your professional journalism is greatly appreciated - GOOD LUCK!
Jon,
So no one will be sending you a pay check on a weekly basis, you may even have a payroll and have to pay them first leaving you with nothing each week. You may have to make a budget, maybe lay someone off if things don't work out as planned. You will have to pay health insurance for your self and your employees and as you are trying to grow your business pay additional taxes once you cross that magical 200k (not sure of you are married) in income that will make you a super-rich 1% guy. I wish you well and can't wait to see you change your political positions as you realize what it takes to stay in business.
This will turn out OK. For the public, for journalism (such as it is), and for the battered and abused lady called "Truth".

given the level of hate and intolerance in the comments section, we need 1000 Ralston's to expose the evil doers and teabaggers who invest our political system

FYI, Mr. Jon Ralston has not only "INCREASE" channel 3's Nielson Ratings as Southern Nevada's number one (1) watched news station, but took no prisoners concerning commentating on Political Views.
Personally, he's a beast and will make it anywhere. For those who have been here long enough over ten (10) to twenty (20) years we all know Las Vegas is its own entity. If you can make it here, you can excel anyplace in the U.S. / World.
Upon reading article & specifically the part where he'll strike out on his own!!! Again, I can't tell the future & don't care too, but he'll make his mark and go above & beyond what he has done for the Las Vegas Sun & Channel 3 News.
P.S.
Jon, continue to do your thing and everything will work out for the best. If you need anything, contact me.
God Bless, Gil polynesianarms@gmail.com
For well over a decade, in both Northern and Southern Nevada, I have made it a practice to follow Jon Ralston. Over the years, he has done an outstanding job providing the best political media coverage here in Nevada.
Certainly, we have not heard the last of Jon Ralston. Besides what he provides on television, he also Tweets, and Facebooks. So for all his faithful followers, all is NOT lost! We still have our trusted media advocate whose truthful political coverage helps clear the air and maybe sways some of our opinions, will carry on.
Wishing you only the best, Jon.
Cheers!
Blessings and Peace,
Star
To Jon Ralston,
Over the years you and I have had our differences but it has always remained professional, I sincerely wish you well. If you are going into the internet commentary business, I know somebody that could keep you remembered and popular (all with a free hand), and help him too in the process while you make that transition. If interested please email me and we could discuss further. Just an old cop reflecting,

Sorry to be the blemish on otherwise glowing
comments. I'm glad you'll not be writing for the Sun anymore. However, sorry to see you'll still be on the tube for the Sun. They changed the schedule around to accommodate JR & moved Jeopardy & Wheel around. Boo! I suggest that the Sun find a real progressive if that's what JR was supposed to be & stop ragging on Harry Reid! There aren't many Libs around LV anymore but perhaps Doug Basham could be persuaded to fill in! I bet the Progressives on other airwaves would like him
Before, the Review Journal, then the Las Vegas Sun. Now probable obscurity on the Internet. I think he left the Sun because of the obscurity of print journalism in Las Vegas. A city of close to 2 million citizens deserves more than the out of state owned, right wing Review Journal. I quit pouring money into their stupid right wing paper after having enough of their idiotic stance on political candidates; remember Sharron Angle? Vegas deserves better than right wing extremist editorial stances on today's world. If I wanted to read BS Arkansas based "libertarian" screeds on a daily basis, I couldn't find a better platform than the Review Journal. Readership is in the toilet for the RJ, and, as Harry Reid once commented, "I hope you go out of business". Couldn't agree more. Until there is a journalistic counterpoint to the RJ's libertarian/right wing editorial policy, I lament the newspaper business in southern Nevada. I subscribed to the Sun print edition for a long time. Then they became an insert with the RJ. I finally quit subscribing, and turned to the internet. Good Luck, Jon. Hope you succeed.
Mr Ralston -
I just witnessed your comments on PBS. How refreshing to find your observations not only on target, but reflective of our state... "Balanced and Battle Ready"
We're very proud of you!!

Haven't always agreed with him, but I love his style!
Best of luck Mr Ralston!
