Overnight construction to close portion of I-15 in North Las Vegas

Construction work

Motorists traveling overnight this week along a portion of Interstate 15 in North Las Vegas should brace for traffic slowdowns as construction continues on the North Fifth Street Bridge.

All southbound and a few northbound lanes of I-15 between the Cheyenne Avenue and Lake Mead Boulevard exits will be closed to traffic from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly through Friday, said North Las Vegas spokeswoman Juliet Casey.

Southbound motorists can detour off of I-15 at the Cheyenne Avenue exit, make a left on Losee Road and then take another left onto the Lake Mead Boulevard ramp to I-15.

The $30 million bridge improvement work is part of the larger North Fifth Street Arterial Project, Casey said.

By extending North Fifth Street across I-15, the project will give motorists another direct route to reach downtown Las Vegas, said Randy DeVaul, deputy director of public works for the city of North Las Vegas.

Motorists can also expect future lane closures in the area until the project is complete, DeVaul added. The project is slated to be completed in 2013.
