Motorcyclist killed

An early afternoon collision near Eastern Avenue and Wigwam Parkway claimed a motorcyclist’s life and injured a pedestrian.

The accident occurred about 1:15 p.m. when a southbound car on Eastern tried to make a left turn onto Wigwam struck the motorcycle, which was northbound on Eastern, said Henderson Police spokesman Keith Paul.

The motorcycle and its male driver slid across the roadway and struck a 27-year-old Las Vegas man standing near a light pole on the northeast corner. Paul said both the motorcycle and driver then struck a power pole. The driver went on to strike a traffic control box, knocking out the power to the traffic signals in the intersection.

The driver died at the scene.

The pedestrian was taken to Sunrise Hospital for treatment. The woman in the Buick was not injured, Paul said.

Reports indicate a Metro Police officer saw the motorcycle rider traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the accident.

Paul said a preliminary investigation points to speed on the part of the motorcycle rider as a factor in the collision. The investigation into the accident remains ongoing.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s name after notification of family.

The wreck was the ninth fatal accident and 12th accident-related death this year in Henderson.
