Truck driver arrested near Hoover Dam after standoff

Incident

Metro Police arrested a truck driver who tried to bypass the Hoover Dam security checkpoint and reach the bridge after a standoff lasting more than an hour on Tuesday, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation external affairs officer Rose Davis said.

Davis said the truck driver had bypassed the security gate around 4:15 p.m. but was promptly stopped by pop-up road barriers well before the dam. Once stopped, a Metro SWAT vehicle arrived on scene to prevent the man driving the truck from turning around, Davis said.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area officer Randy Lavasseur said the man then prompted police officers to shoot him. However, Davis said Metro Police were able to arrest the unarmed man without incident.

Davis said Metro Police officials are investigating the man’s motives.
