Feds announce Nevada biofuel plant

The Obama administration is announcing a $105 million federal loan guarantee for a California firm to construct a northern Nevada plant that will convert common household trash into ethanol for transportation fuel.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack tells The Associated Press the Fulcrum Sierra BioFuels project being unveiled Monday is part of an ongoing effort to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil and develop sustainable energy alternatives.

Sierra BioFuels plans to convert 147,000 tons of municipal solid waste into 10 million gallons of ethanol annually.

The plant will be built 20 miles east of Reno in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center in Storey County.

Officials say the project will create 430 construction jobs and 53 permanent jobs after completion by 2015.
