Letter to the editor:

Solar energy wastes money

In a recent column, J. Patrick Coolican bemoans declining government support for clean energy even though he admits it is not competitive with fossil fuel power.

In fact, solar plants require long-term power contracts at exorbitant prices to guarantee their owners a profit. The high prices must be passed directly to consumers through higher utility bills. So, for the new Crescent Dunes plant in Tonopah, NV Energy will have to charge consumers an additional 9 cents per kilowatt-hour for the power.

Mr. Coolican says wasting huge amounts of government money on clean energy is OK because the government already wastes huge amounts on other things. I guess he feels it’s not his money.

But this even goes beyond government waste. I wonder how he will feel when the higher electric bills start coming his way.
