Longtime official in secretary of state’s office is leaving post

The woman who has filed the candidacy of hundreds of politicians ranging from U.S. senator down to state Board of Education is leaving the secretary of state's office.

Kristi Geiser has worked for six election deputies and for Secretary of State Dean Heller and Ross Miller during her 15-year tenure. She is taking a job in the legal division of the Legislative Counsel Bureau as program officer.

As second in charge of the election section, Geiser has signed the candidates up, administered them their oath and has given them instruction.

One of her most memorable moments came when she filed the candidacy of Lynn Hettrick of Minden for a seat in the Nevada Assembly. She asked him to raise his right hand to take the oath.

In an instant, she learned that Hettrick's right arm had been amputated. But she said Hettrick took it in good humor. Since then she only asks the candidate to raise his or her arm to take the oath.

She said she will miss the secretary of state's office "but I've been offered a great opportunity I could not turn down."
