At the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., fans don’t just come to listen to music -- they dress for it. Despite rain and chilly temperatures on the first day of this past weekend’s festival, attendees were eager to strut their stuff once the desert sun came out.
For some, the festival was an occasion to show off super-chic ensembles: Lace shorts, felt sunhats, floral garlands and tribal prints were especially prominent fashion-forward choices. For others, the festival was an opportunity to play adult dress-up: Face paint, body glitter, feathers and any number of shiny/neon accessories could be spotted throughout the crowd, particularly near the dance tent.
From the well-dressed to the wacky, here’s a look at Coachella 2012 Weekend 1 style.

Cami and Keaton came all the way from Miami for the weekend’s festivities. Denim cutoffs and tribal prints were an especially popular choice among the ladies this year; pair them with light, flowing neutrals for a head-turning pop. Keaton bought her sequined and beaded shorts from online British retailer Asos.

The men of Coachella tended to rock band shirts and Ray-Bans. Robbie and Matt of San Diego hip-hop group Vokab Kompany stayed cool in these vintage duds.

Lace shorts like these by Free People were all the rage at Coachella this weekend, as were oversized felt sun hats. Amanda from L.A. paired them with a sheer vintage camisole, neon bandeau and beaded tribal necklace during the day; her vintage fur vest was a perfect choice to throw on when temperatures dropped at night.
