Expectations for Hispanic voter influence temper as registrations lag

In early March, Time magazine ran the cover story, “Why Latinos will pick the next president,” on the heels of a report from a national Latino political organization saying the number of Hispanic voters would climb 26 percent in 2012. Two weeks after the Time article ran, those expectations were snuffed out by a census survey showing Hispanic voter registration, for the first time in at least 40 years, had decreased in the two years after a presidential election. That left soothsayers to temper their expectations and reassess how much influence Hispanic voters would command in 2012. At the start ...

  2. The "Hispanic" community, for the most part, are quite transcient, and seem to always need some type of "hero" to get them united together with a reason to vote. Their voting power is inconsistant at best. The more "vested" they are, as having a stable job that keeps them in a community, the more apt they are to vote.

Brooking Institute supports this, ""Hispanic dispersion to 'new destination' metropolitan areas and suburbs dropped sharply in the late 2000s. Charlotte, N.C.; Raleigh, N.C.; Atlanta, Provo, and Las Vegas were among the metro areas experiencing the steepest declines in Hispanic growth after 2007 as construction jobs dried up," a report from the Brookings Institution stated."

But other factors also affect their willpower: faith in leadership and belief the political process is listening and working on their behalf. Do I hear disillusionment over the DREAM ACT and all the political reelection failed promises by career politicians? Well, those in the Hispanic community are joining the club with voter apathy in much of the United States of America.

At one time those in the Hispanic community were happy to be here, share in the American Dream, work doing anything for no benefits as cheap labor, but not no more. When they decided that they should be treated as the rest of Americans, their political tables and influence turned against them. Having decent pay, benefits, and buying power changed how the political/corporate world treats them.

  3. Also note that Hispanics of Cuban descent are not interested in immigration reform, nor are many 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation people of southern descent. They are interested in reviving our economy, balancing the federal budget, CUTTING welfare programs, shoring up SS and Medicare. So the "hispanic" vote might affect California, maybe Arizona, some effect elsewhere in Western states but little overall impact. That's why politicians (in federal races) who pander to minority interests that are in DIRECT CONFLICT TO AMERICAN NEEDS are short sighted.

  5. to our latino friends...
    get one thing straight...
brian sandoval is not your friend...
he could not care less about you...
    he is your enemy...
sure his parents may be mexican immigrants...
but ole brian is a radical right wing republican con...
he wants to bring the hammer down on those who walk in the footsteps once traveled by his parents...
he wants to kick you out of the country...
    and...
he wants to inflict irreparable harm on your children...
he only wants to increase the revenues for the private school he attended by implementing vouchers...
    vouchers are a joke...
    a band aid...
an admission they you really are not interested in fixing the problem for all...
a desire to fix only what needs to be fixed to protect your own kids...
and ole brian is screaming from the top of his lungs...
    screw those latino kids...
even though he was one of them...
    BRIAN SANDOVAL IS A HYPOCRITE!!!

  9. Warrior...

I would say that Harry & his "Casino Corporate pimps" have been relatively good fortune for the Hispanic community assembled hereabouts.

I hope the Hispanic community ROCKS THE VOTE...

I'm sure Mittens, for example, will really appeal to the informed Hispanic voter...

Viva la Romney por El Presidente!
    El Jefe, Mittens Man!

  10. Many Hispanics are Catholic.

They can't be pleased with Obama and Democrats on the religious liberty of the Catholic church by forcing priests and nuns to spend church money on birth control and abortion pills so that people who are not married can have sex.

  11. ^^^I doubt most Hispanics would fall for that lie.^^^

  12. Two words. Jan Brewer. If Hispanics were not willing to vote for Republicans Jan Brewer wouldn't have been elected Governor of Arizona. Sorry Dems, much of the Hispanic population is still Catholic, doesn't favor abortion, and fled Socialist countries to get to a better life in the U.S.
