Glowing orbs caught in Luxor beam remain a mystery

Luxor lights

A tourist with a digital camera is convinced a group of lights filmed over the Luxor 12 days ago are from — well, he’s not sure where.

Not even an executive for MGM Resorts International, which owns the Luxor, knows what the strange lights were.

Yvette Monet, an MGM resorts spokeswoman, said that from home some three miles away, she regularly looks in the direction of the light beamed from atop the Luxor while watching planes land at McCarran International Airport. Never before has she seen anything like the lights she saw March 21.

“I don’t have an explanation,” Monet said. “I hadn’t seen them stay in the same part of the sky like that.”

The videographer, Drew Allan, is an Ohio resident who emailed the Sun over the weekend. “People REALLY deserve to know what happened that night,” he wrote. “All I can do is share my story and let them make up their minds on their own.”

Allan could not be reached immediately by phone.

Metro Police received one phone call at 9:43 p.m. March 21, a spokesman said, from someone reporting lights flying through the beam of the Luxor. The caller described the lights as "some large, some small" and said they may have been "some type of aircraft." A Nellis Air Force Base spokeswoman said she had not heard anything about the orbs.

Filmed from what appears to be the pedestrian overpass near the Cosmopolitan, Allan captured the lights dancing around what appears to be the Luxor beam. Two more videos of similar lights caught in the beam of the Luxor on March 22 can also be found on YouTube.

The Luxor beam is known for attracting hordes of insects at night. In turn, those insects attract hungry birds and bats.

Some online viewers speculated the flying orbs are merely the light reflecting off of birds enjoying an insect feast.
