REBELS BASKETBALL:

UNLV moves Scarlet and Gray scrimmage to Thomas & Mack on Sunday, Oct. 16

Move allows accommodation for swell of fans as 2011-12 men’s basketball season tips off

UNLV has changed the date and venue for its season-opening Scarlety and Gray scrimmage.

The first chance for the public to see first-year coach Dave Rice's team go full-speed was originally slated for Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Cox Pavilion, due to a previously scheduled major tennis event that had the Thomas & Mack Center booked that day.

Instead, the scrimmage will now be held on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Mack, with doors opening to the public at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.

"We planned to hold the workout and scrimmage on Saturday, but the feedback we received was that there will be a higher demand for space than the Cox Pavilion allows with seating for only 2,500," Rice said. "We want to be able to accommodate as many fans that want to attend as possible. The Thomas & Mack Center isn't available on Saturday, and the 6 p.m. time on Sunday was selected to be as family-friendly as possible."

Oct. 14 is the first day that college basketball teams can officially practice for the 2011-12 season. The team introduction event that Friday night at the Fremont Street Experience will still go on as planned.

UNLV will play an exhibition game against Washburn at the Mack on Nov. 1, followed by the regular season opener against Grand Canyon on Nov. 11.

  1. The exhibition is on Nov 1, not Nov 11.
