KSNV coverage of unexplained fires at NV Energy substations and transformers, Sept. 15, 2011.
An NV Energy substation about 30 miles north of Las Vegas caught fire shortly after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, but the blaze did not knock out power to customers, officials said.
The fire was out as of about 7:10 p.m., but firefighters have continued to douse the area with water and foam to keep it cool and are expected to stay on the scene throughout the night, officials said.
Firefighters from North Las Vegas, Nellis Air Force Base and Clark County fought the blaze at the substation at 18885 Las Vegas Boulevard.
About 30,000 gallons of mineral oil was inside the substation, but how much burned has not been determined, officials said.
Firefighters used foam to contain the fire, county officials said.
There was no impact to customers and no reports of injury, an NV Energy spokesperson said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage is being assessed, county officials said.

"There was no impact to customers"
at least not untill they ask for a rate hike to pay for the loss
I drove by around 6 pm and the place was surrounded by massive lightening strikes. It looked to me that weather was the likely cause.
