Forecasters predict chance of rain, strong winds, hail

A low-pressure system is creating a chance of showers and thunderstorms through the middle of next week, with damaging winds the main threat Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Trace amounts of rain fell across the Las Vegas Valley on Thursday. But a significant increase in showers and thunderstorms is expected over the weekend, with a possibility for heavy rain and hail, the weather service said.

Wind gusts of 67 mph at Nellis Air Force Base and 48 mph at McCarren International Airport were recorded on Thursday, the weather service said.

Cooler temperatures are expected this weekend. Thursday’s high was 103 with an expected low of 79. Friday highs should be around 100 with a low of 79. Saturday and Sunday cool off with highs near 90 and lows around 75.
