2011 Fall A+E Guide: Concerts

Katy Perry

Life’s more fun when you dress like a Candyland character all the time.

Black Star House of Blues (September 13) One, two, three, Mos Def and Talib Kweli. They came to rock it on to the tip-top, best alliance in hip-hop.

The Joy Formidable Cosmopolitan (September 15 & 17) This noisy Welsh trio blew the roof, er, canopy off its tent at Coachella. Recommended whether your favorite ’90s band is The Smashing Pumpkins or My Bloody Valentine.

Caifanes House of Blues (September 16) One of Mexico’s most-beloved rock bands is reunited after a 16-year break and headed to town for a rare club date.

TV on the Radio & Arctic Monkeys Cosmopolitan (September 23) The Cosmo pool indies out for the fourth weekend of this month. One night after Brooklyn’s TVOTR and England’s Monkeys team (with opener Smith Westerns) for a Friday show, Bright Eyes plays the same pool stage with Warpaint and Kurt Vile.

IHeartRadio Music Festival MGM Grand (September 23-24) Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Kenny Chesney and other giant names team for a two-day blowout. We’re pretty sure you don’t really have to heart radio to go.

The Smashing Pumpkins Cosmopolitan (October 8) Yeah, the new members aren’t the folks you remember from the ’90s. And yeah, the new tunes aren’t as good as the ones you remember from the ’90s. But Billy and his back-catalog will be there, which means we will, too.

48 Hours Festival Luxor Festival Grounds (October 15-16) Avenged Sevenfold. Korn. Godsmack. Five Finger Death Punch. Three Days Grace. Hollywood Undead. Think of it as Electric Daisy Carnival for hard rock fans.

Critic’s Pick

Shellac Beauty Bar (October 19) I never expected to see Steve Albini in Las Vegas. Actually, part of me still doesn’t. I mean, what are the chances this fiercely independent (as in, Albini criticized Sonic Youth for going mainstream), rare-touring Chicago trio will really be onstage in the alley behind Beauty Bar come Wednesday, October 19? Canceled Pixies, Jesus and Mary Chain and Echo & The Bunnymen gigs come flooding to mind. If Shellac does show, locals will be treated to a powerful, stripped-down set by one of the truly impressive rock bands of our time. I’ve seen them three times over the past three years (in New York), and I’d travel again to see them now … if they weren’t coming to Las Vegas. Assuming they really do. –SPENCER PATTERSON

Roger Daltrey The Joint (October 22) He’s doing Tommy … without Pete Townshend. Call us curious.

Katy Perry Mandalay Bay (November 19) At last, the pop star can kiss a girl and wake up in Vegas at the same tour stop.

Morrissey Cosmopolitan (November 25) He ran offstage after his last Vegas date (at the Joint) without explanation at the one-hour mark. The two before that (at the Pearl) were brilliant. With moody Moz, you never know what you’re gonna get.
