Letter to the editor:

Hepatitis C verdict misplaces blame

What a shame that the jurors in the recent hepatitis C outbreak case awarded $162.5 million in punitive damages to the three people infected.

The actions of today’s jurors to hand out ridiculous amounts in these cases does nothing but drive up the health care costs for all Americans.

Yes, it is tragic and inexcusable for something like the outbreak to have happened, and the victims have my complete sympathy. But as anyone in the medical field should know, you never reuse a syringe in a sterile vial, no matter if it is a 10mg or 50mg vial. Or even if it was a five-gallon bucket of medicine!

The fault clearly falls on those who reintroduced a dirty syringe into an otherwise sterile vial of medicine. Shame on this jury.
